Your computer history!

I will only post computers that were in fact mine so family computers won't be included in the list.

Desktops

1- Intel Core 2 Duo, 500 GB HDD, Windows 7, 19" Samsung LCD monitor, 4GB RAM and GeForce 9800 GT
2- My current desktop (since 2013): Intel Core I7-4770, 1 TB HDD, Windows 7 Professional, 24" Benq LED monitor, 8 GB RAM and GeForce GTX 660

Laptops

1-Toshiba Satellite A40-S161 (was my dad's notebook from 2004 until 2007, in 07 he gave it to me):

15", Intel Pentium 4, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, Windows XP

2- Dell Latitude (can't remember the exact model)

15", Intel Core 2 Duo (i guess), 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Windows XP

3- My current laptop (since 2010): HP G42

14" LED screen, Intel Core I3 M350, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium

That's it!

Like Bruno, I'll only post computers that I have owned (not shared with anyone/initially bought for family):

*Dell Latitude D630 - bought this from Dell Outlet for school in like late 2007. I'm typing from it right now. 1440x900 screen, 2 GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM hard drive made RTM Windows Vista that it shipped with run pretty nicely. Only upgrade I've made since was upping the RAM to 4 GB and running various forms of Linux, attempted Hackintosh, and Windows. Right now it's on Windows 7. I'll throw linux on it once my desktop project gets underway.

*Dell Latitude E6420 - Bought this in like 2012 but had to sell after the failturn's transmission lurch caused me to hit a Jeep parked in front of me. Core i5, dedicated AMD graphics...I loved it. No SSD though. :( After selling it, I wen't back to the D630.

*MSI Wind U100: This was pretty cool - I got it as a nice little machine to use for hackintosh and college stuff. It even ran Windows 7 complete with Aero graphics without issues. They're tougher than one would think too - the school district I work at has several carts of these deployed to elementary schools and they get used a lot. I gave mine to my cousin who promptly broke it...or my asshole uncle broke it to fuck with him because it was mine. :(

*Dell Venue 8 Pro: I like it but I don't use it very often. It's a tablet computer with a Atom and Windows 8.1. I wish Windows 8's auto-correct was better and Dell's touchscreen accuracy was better. I may check for firmware updates to try and see if it's improvable.

Hopefully in the next month I'll be able to begin getting parts for a desktop that'll replace the D630. Build list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/q4Pv7P

Cant wait!

Depending on the style of iMac,
It might be repairable but, a major pain in the ass just like all Apple products.

These iMacs are a pain to open and close properly without trapping dust between the glass and the display. The power supply is quite easy to reach after that though if I remember correctly. I believe the part isn't extremely expensive, but it may be starting to be hard to find.

The ones I've built as a primary workstation:

  • AM386-DX20, 4MB RAM, 128MB HDD, 12" TTL Monitor
  • Pentium 166MMX, 64MB RAM, 2GB HDD, Trident, 15" CRT
  • Pentium III 550MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, Riva TNT2, 19" CRT
  • Athlon 1GHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB HDD, GeForce3, 19" CRT
  • Athlon 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 120GB HDD, GeForce3, 19" LCD
  • Athlon XP 2200+, 512MB RAM, 120GB HDD, GeForce FX, 19" LCD
  • Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB RAM, 240GB HDD, GeForce FX, 19" LCD
  • Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 2GB RAM, 640GB HDD, GeForce 7600, 24" LCD
  • Athlon II X4 640, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD, Radeon HD 5670, 24" LCD
  • Phenom II X4 980 BE, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD, Radeon HD 6850, 3x LCD
  • FX-8350, 16GB RAM, 3.5TB HDD, Radeon HD 6850, 3x LCD (Current)

(Primary) Laptops:

  • Gateway Pentium 4 1.6GHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 14"
  • Acer Extensa Core2Duo, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 14"
  • Lenovo X120e, AMD E350, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 12"
  • Dell Latitude E6530, 3rd gen i7 quad, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6", stolen after 4 months
  • Dell Latitude E5420, 2nd gen i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 14"

Current server is the Phenom II X4 980, 8GB RAM, and 14TB of RAID5.

This is not to mention my hand-me-down parts systems, servers, and "other" laptops. As for the seemingly huge gap between the first two I actually built the first one after the Pentium came out, from scavenged parts.

12. G5 with dual 2.5 GHz PPC, it runs ish on 10.5 Leopard, I threw an old 250GB HDD in for shits and giggles. I bought it for $50 odd to be my donor box for my Hackintosh. It's been sitting for a year or more though
13. Acer Switch 10, Atom powered, 2GB RAM, 64GB, Win 8.1 machine. Fun little toy.

I regret buying computers 2017-onwards.

I'd prefer

Your computer history!

Apple Performa 6400/180
Compaq 7450?
PowerBook G3 500MHz
iMac G3 tray load
iMac G3 slot load
iMac G5 iSight
iMac Intel Early 2008
iMac G4 15"
PowerMac G4 450MHz dual
PowerMac G4 733MHz
Sony Vaio NS series
Samsung series 3(current)
Home brew AMD A10 @3.8GHz

That's kind of it really, this all happened in the span between '01 to now.
Hey, let’s update this!

HP Envy X360 from 2016
Intel Core i7 6th gen, intel graphics and 16GB of memory.

Desktop is the bestop: AMD Ryzen 3700 w/ 32GB of memories.

That Samsung laptop was retired in July 2016 when the GPU died. The old AMD A10 went to my parents after I escaped the US, which was only last month. That PC is still kicking.

there are quite a few things in here that could be put in a museum, right? :O that's just awesome!
unfortunately, i'm too young for that! I got my first own PC in 1998:

1. Pentium MMX (oh yah! feel the power!) 166MHz
2. Pentium 3 450MHz (I really don't know why they made a P3 with only 450... whatever)
3. Duron 1,2GHz
4. AthlonXP 2600+
5. Athlon64 3000+
6. Laptop: Core2Duo T7500

and, to bore you some more, the graphics belonging to listed processors:

1. ATI Rage2 / Mach64
2. Matrox Marvel G200 ==> Geforce2 MX400
3. abovementioned MX400
4. abovementioned MX400 ==> Radeon 9500pro
5. Geforce 6800GT
6. Geforce 8800M-GS

enough of that!!!

I have to say that I liked the AMD2600+ with the 9500pro by far the most of all those computers (now don't you die on because you're offended you stupid laptop!).

May I also add that, when getting the Duron I started to watch after the noise of the thing a lot! I had quite a few BRICK-like coolers in my PC and reason enough to be afraid as hell when transporting it. MX400 and R9500 were passively cooled back then (it was still possible, damn that modern rubbish). One of the reasons for me to get a laptop was also the noise...
Wowza... Update after 13 years???

7. Intel i5-750 + GTX760 (some time later, no idea)
8. Intel i5-6600K + nvidia GTX760
9. Intel i7-8750U (Dell XPS13 that I still own) + external AMD RX580
10. AMD Ryzen 5 4650 + RTX3060Ti

1998: Dell Optiplex something. Pentium 100MHz, 64MB RAM, two 6GB HDDs. Windows 98.
2002: Packard Bell Imedia. Celeron 1.7GHz, 256B RAM, 40GB HDD.
2004 (maybe): Upgraded to 512MB RAM, extra 120GB HDD, Radeon 9250.
2006: Built 2.2GHz AMD 64X2, 2GB DDR RAM, 320GB HDD.
2009: Rebuilt to Core 2 Quad 9550 (2.83GHz), 4GB DDR2, 2x512GB, 1TB HDDs, 9800GTX+.
I may as well update this too

2013: Replaced GTX9800+ with a GTX 660 out of the work scrap bin.
2014: Rescued Core 2 Extreme from work scrap, 8GB DDR2, twin GTX 660s in SLi, 1TB 840 EVO SSD.
Old machine becomes media server with 3x3TB WD Reds.
Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, i5 with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. Bad decision but I still have it.
2015: Rebuilt with i5-4690K, 16GB DDR3, 1TB 850 EVO added. Kept GTX 660s.
2016: GTX 660s replaced with single GTX 970.
2017: GTX 970 replaced with GTX 1080Ti.
New build with i7-8700K, 32GB DDR4, Deepcool 240mm AIO, 1TB 970 EVO
Server rebuilt in a new case with i5 guts
2018: 1995 Dolch PAC 62 luggable purchased - P100 with 32MB RAM
2021: GTX 1080Ti replaced with RTX 3080
1995 Dell Optiplex GL+ 5100 purchased - P100 with 64MB RAM, as close to the first machine as I could get.

2022/23: Possibly a 12th gen. Core i7 with 64GB RAM coming up. Maybe?

I'd want to do a "Your ccar history" thread but... that would be impossible with the "proof of ownership" requirements.

Why? Who’s going to lie about owning an Opel?

  • Haha
Reactions: lip

Thanks! My apologies for disrupting the conversation.

Family computers:
  1. An old IBM 386 PS/2 system, I think. It's still in my room at my parents' place
  2. A Windows 95 system that later got upgraded to Windows 98 and that I later used for retro gaming at my grandma's
  3. A Windows XP system with a Pentium IV that I played lots of Need For Speed games on
  4. A Windows 7 system (that's currently running Windows 10), still used by my parents. That one I actually know the specs of. Pentium E6600, 4GB DDR3 (recently bumped to 8GB by me), 500GB WD Blue HDD (later added a 2TB Toshiba drive that I'm still trying to persuade my parents to migrate all the data from the 500GB drive to, so I can replace that drive with a 240GB Kingston A400 SSD I have lying around), Radeon 5570 (that eventually died and was replaced by an NVidia GT710 2GB). Not a powerhouse by any means, but it does the job for my parents
Computers that were given to me to use, most of them at my grandma's:
  1. An old Widnows 95 system, identical to one that my parents had but that was never upgraded to Windows 98
  2. The aforementioned Windows 98 system, which I did lots of retro gaming on
  3. A Windows XP system with a 1GHz Intel Celeron that I might've overclocked to 1.4GHz, 256GB and much to my annoyance, integrated graphics. Tried a couple of Linux distros on it until I realized my teenage ass can't do without some light gaming (you can imagine how light it was on that system, the newest game it'd run remotely OK was GTA Vice City)
  4. A Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop with a Celeron and 3GB of RAM (one of the two original 1GB sticks died and was replaced with a 2GB stick), it was slow and unusable, but it was a uni laptop for me until I could afford something somewhat decent. That one is the only one that wasn't used at my grandma's
Computers that I paid my hard-earned money for:
  1. A Dell Inspiron 15-3567 laptop. Core i7-7500U, 8GB of DDR4 (later bumped to 16GB), 1TB 5400rpm HDD (later replaced by a far faster 500GB Transcend SSD), Radeon R5 M430 graphics (which suck and I don't understand why Dell didn't just stick to Intel's HD graphics). I also replaced it's 1366x768 TN panel with a 1920x1080 IPS one, which still sucks, but far less than the original one. Bought it in 2017, but I'm planning to replace it soon
  2. A Dell Precision T3610 desktop. Xeon E5-1620 v2, 16GB of DDR3 ECC, 100GB SSD + 500GB HDD (both of which were replaced, the SSD with a 500GB Samsung 860 Evo, and the HDD with a 6TB WD Red Pro NAS drive), NVS 295 GPU (utter unusable POS GPU, so replaced by a blower-style GTX 1080 that I bought just before the prices skyrocketed in late 2020). Bought it for cheap in 2020 to use as a uni workhorse that can play an occasional game or two. I'm using it with a Dell U2717D 1440p IPS monitor that I also bought with my own money, IBM Model M keyboard (can you guess where that one came from? Even though right now I'm using a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013 that sucks big times), and a Logitech M705 mouse (which is okay, but a bit small). I'm planning to replace that as well, but not immediately
Okay, that's it. I don't really remember the specs of most older systems, but I do remember OS they were running.
