LONDON (Reuters) - British comedian Sasha Baron Cohen escaped a near-riot at an American rodeo while filming his satirical "Da Ali G Show."

According to a report in the Roanoke (Virginia) Times, a man who was introduced as Boraq Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan -- in reality a Cohen character named Borat -- appeared at the rodeo over the weekend after organizers agreed to have him sing the national anthem.

After telling the crowd he supported America's war on terrorism, he said, "I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq (news - web sites), down to the lizards ... And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq." He then sang a garbled version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The Roanoke Times reported that the crowd turned "downright nasty." One observer said "If he had been out there a minute longer, I think somebody would have shot him."

Cohen and his film crew were escorted out of the Salem Civic Center and told to leave the premises.

"Had we not gotten them out of there, there would have been a riot," rodeo producer Bobby Rowe told the paper. "They loaded up the van and they screeched out of there."

It is not the first time Cohen has wooed controversy with his show, which airs on Channel 4 in the UK and on HBO in the United States. In one episode last year, Borat sang an anti-Semitic song called "Throw the Jew Down the Well" at a U.S. country music bar, prompting protests from the U.S-based Anti-Defamation League.

Producers of the Ali G show, Talkback Thames, were unavailable for comment.

Sounds like a retard to me. Never seen his show though.

He's extremely funny, I'll certainly give him that. A comic genius. I remember when I first saw him on "Not The 11 O'Clock News", he was really good on that. Trouble is, the chavs (the British scum) started to emulate his style and after that he really lost his appeal. Which is a shame.

uhm, YOU're a retard, if you really mean that. Yes, I called you a retard :)

It's such a typical ignorant thing to say: "This is new to me, it sounds bad, so I decide not to like it" That's exactly what you are saying !!!

Cohen aka. "Ali G"/"Borat", is actually from an educated family somewhere in the UK. (Brits, help me out)
He's smart, got a degree from some british university - and even his family are known for their intelligence.

I first saw him in 2000, and loved him in 2001 while living in London.
After his 3.rd movie, I got tired of the humor and I didn't even laugh much when he presented for the MTV music awards.

What i respect him for, is standing up against the system, the leaders and "important" people, and tell them exactly what "he" (ali G) wants to. You're bound to get a blunt answer ......

It's your attitude towards the unknown I react to Viper, hope you understand. I feel this is usually the attitude americans have towards knowledge which is new and different to them. (I know, I have lived in the US, and later worked with plenty of americans, even in NATO) So I'm not taking this out of thin air ...

Why not say; "hey, this sounds crazy to me! Tell me more, THEN I'll decide what I think ... stop the judging !!!!!!

Ali G has a Cambridge masters degree. Basically, this is the equivalent of a Harvard degree in America, I think. Anyway, it's the very best university in the UK and most highly respected.

And Viper, with his ignorance, calls Ali G a "retard"   *dies of laughter* man .... that was too cool ........

He's a *very* well educated individual who created a decent comic presence taking the piss out of people who should really know better. Unfortunately, his humour as Ali G was never going to last and people started to avoid him, so the comedy died.

Creating Borat was another fine example of catching people out, by creating something as simple as an international reporter from a country no one knows about. It's so simple, yet so many people fell for it.

He's done a bit for charity, so he's a reasonable bloke in my opinion. Sure, he wants to piss people off - thats part of the gag.

I wouldn't expect Americans to understand him at all. His US show was to make Brits laugh as he travelled around America.

There is a documentary about him floating around somewhere as a torrent which gets in to very detailed history of his education and career. Worth watching if you've ever laughed at his gags.

I happen to live in the area where this happened, you wouldn't believe the outrage I heard about it from people and the local media. Part of the reason for this is that this area is ultra-conservative, and any stab at anyone related to American government is taken as a personal attack, not as a joke. Roanoke/Salem people need to lighten up, but I think his choice of venue was a bit wrong. I personally think he is funny in small doses, but anything longer than an hour and a half and the jokes start getting old.

I saw the bit where they let him sing the Kazakhstan national anthem at an American Football game. The most painful yet hilarious thing I've ever seen on TV. Actually, the whole 'Ali G in the US' series. I can only say RESTECP. You have to be either very brave or genuinely fucked up to do stuff like that
