Chris Davies is a moron. People like that should be brought to the street and shot several times.

You can have my sports car when you pry it from my cold dead hands!

What a load a shite - maybe he just loves proving how little he actually knows about the subject.

Not again. So many times these lefty socialists want to kill cars and start labeling them as the evil tools of the rich and the destroyers of the poor. Sure, inefficient, polluting cars have been the toys of the rich for an entire century. But if they want to finger the car as creating global-warming hordes of demonic tailpipes, maybe they should look out the window. It's not the big fatcats reclining in the backs of their limos that are belching out the majority of the CO2 that's trapping heat in our atmosphere (disclaimer: CO2 is definitely a greenhouse gas, exhibit A: Venus, but I hold no opinion on the impact of manmade CO2 on the Earth). No, it's every single family hatchback, sedan, and van taking tax-paying, hard-working, aspirational people to work, home, and in between. Sheer, fucking numbers, people.. for every 10MPG Lambo sold, a hundred compact cars disgorge onto the roadways over thirty times the tailpipe breath that the Italian weekend toy would ever hope to exhale. Yes, let's pry the wheels from the wretched masses, and stop them from reaching higher than their given lot in life, let them be simple and where they ought to be! Let's stop torching SUVs and start torching Toyota Corollas, all for being so damn affordable and reliable and falling into the hands of millions of unworthily satisfied buyers throughout the world, and being such an attainable goal for those whose automotive aspirations are almost within reach! Make a human chain in front of every car dealership, turning away the exhausted masses in India, China, Thailand, anyone who's toiled for the privilege to have the slightest control over one's physical destiny! Let's destroy the mobile social ladder, for the true cause of global warming is the human desire to reach higher! Send them back to the manors, the peasant farms, and the low-emissions hell of poverty, destitution, and feudalism! Save the earth and crush their dreams!

...I think that's off my chest now.

Dude,. EU will never ban sports cars, so relax ok? =)
That article is just full of shyt. :)

Banning sports cars means goodbye to Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, Bugatti, Bentley, Lotus, Aston Martin, Ascari and pretty much any other sports car maker.

The EU has done many other stupid things (raising hood lines, for example); what makes you think banning sports cars is beyond the realm of reality for the EU?

And you think the EU cares... how?

Note that the raised hoodlines "to protect pedestrians" almost killed off the sportscar already; only through exemptions hard won by national reps did it manage to not apply to Ferrari and Lambo, etc. They're trying the same thing again, only being more blatant this time.

If the EU cared about profit, why do they keep raising your taxes?

On the up side all the cops will have to drive diesel estates with 20 bhp. So who would stop you?

Reminds me of a song....

That could be seen as an advantage...

Also I'm seeing those guys on the 21st. 8)

this is going to sound incredibly stupid, i know, but why can't a country just (lets say germany or italy since their automotive industry is huge) just leave the EU? The EU as a whole, i don't exactly understand it

The truth is in the article.

For those who abhor sports cars as vulgar symbols of affluence (along with vacation homes, furs and fancy jewelry), such a ban could be a two-fer: Saving the planet while cutting economic inequality.

It's the politics of envy. Also note how some people seem to want to end fun - they'll use any excuse, it seems to me.

The German economy would get screwed over if that happened. Considering they probably have the most influence in the EU, I can't see it happening. I could see them really striving for better fuel economy and stuff like that and you'll see loads of hybrid systems and the like but none of this 101mph crap. I mean does they guy want to restrict speed like the germans do to 155mph or is he really suggesting that cars would be so pittifully weak and slow that they couldn't reach that speed if they tried? My old Ford Ka could probably hit that speed for god sake.

I would be surprised if the EU "banned" sports cars, as that would be a serious damage to the German car industry, and when a measure is against the interests of one of the "big guys" (France and Germany, mostly) it never gets implemented. On the other hand, the speed cap for all cars sounds like the kind of crap that the EU would come up as a compromise, so I won't be surprised if it comes to effect eventually.

lol seriously damage the German car industry.... come on people, the big German companies don't rely on the sport cars or hi-po vehicles, except for Porsche. Some of you people are exaggerating. Yes it would suck if it were to happen but come on...
There probably something more but, yeah...

What about the Lotus Elise? That'd combine sportscar fun with economy.

Geez, Europe (and particularly the UK) has some weird eco-nutters. They're much less extreme here, and I'd imagine they'd be less extreme in the States, too.

Some of the eco-nutters seem to be on a mission to convince people that the only sustainable existence is a neolithic stone-age style existence, relying purely on subsistence farming to survive. Well, I'm sorry, but I like the conveniences offered by modern Western society.

I spose it's just like the bible-crazies, though, with extreme opinions they want to force on everyone.

Yep.....and I wonder what people who DO live a stone-age style existence would choose if they where given a choice?
