I cracked the plastic rear window in my '94 Miata by putting the top down when it was below freezing. With a glass rear window I doubt there's any risk at all.

The heater in my NA partially melted my mother's (admittedly cheap) purse. She complained, "Why didn't you tell me the heater was so strong?" "How do you think I keep the top down in freezing temps?" "... Oh"

Hmm, so maybe I just store some food on the freezing cold trunk and have a heater powered BBQ in the car when I'm driving

I think the concern here is about old tops where the vinyl gets brittle and is prone to cracking if folded when cold.

The zipper and the seams around it all can still be a problem. Especially with dealing with the extra weight. Friend of mine has an NB2 that is starting to tear thanks to putting it up and down in cold temps.
