Final Gear Racing 2011 - 24 Hours Of LeMons

I've got a bit of SC 3800 news for everyone. First, our friends at Team Fubar debuted a new theme for their GTP, but sadly their race didn't go very smoothly. I don't know what happened but they only managed 7 laps the whole weekend with a best lap time of 2:20 (our best was 2:05 last year). I think this makes it their third engine in as many races.

Then there was this 10th generation Olds Delta 88 Coupe.

Looks like any late 80's GM land yacht right? Well under the hood it's packing a little surprise.

Look familiar? It's another supercharged Series II 3800. From how the coil packs are flat I'd say they got the engine from a Park Avenue Ultra, Bonneville SSEi, or Olds LSS and then used some of the engine mounts from a 3.8 powered W body like our GTP. They were up to 8th place at one point but their transmission gave out sometime on Sunday and wound up finishing 68th. While I'm sure the engine didn't just drop in, the fact that the 88 came with an older version of the 3800 from the factory made things much easier. It's nice to see more and more of these engines make their way into the series, even if this is only the 4th to do so.

I have other looks. They include camp chair & fiber board throwing. And, sometimes I'll force an old lady to kiss me. PB missed that event. I still don't know who to apologize to.

Are you sure it wasn't the inflatable doll Road Warrior Racing had?

Team Fubar experienced rod knock this time around. Three LeMons races with a new or mostly new 3800 engine (2 engines, 1 supercharger) and these f**kers failed again. They are loosely associated with Team Speedycop and after three races and <12 laps per race we've been campaigning for them to win the "i got screwed'' award. Not expecting any consolation here, but dem's the facts.

I had heard that if this happened again, they were going to try putting in a 3.4 from a Grand Am as a backup engine, but I guess they're waiting to try that swap sometime down the line.

You know, PB, for such a supposedly reliable powertrain, these things sure do break a lot.</troll>

Obviously what we need is twincharging.

Hey, the car made it through Summit 2010 unscathed.

I don't think that's fair considering the sample size is only 4 cars.

After four weeks of being in the shop, we got the truck back... only to have this fuel pump go out 3 miles from the dealer. Back to the shop it goes...

...the hell?

Damn dude!

But, heres hoping it get fixed properly this time....

I've talked before about just how much CMP likes to eat brakes alive, but here's one more example I swiped from Doug's picture collection, I believe it's from the Tunachucker's Ford LTD. As I recall they estimated the car still weighed well over 4,000lbs by the time it would roll onto the track, so they wisely replaced their entire brake system with new parts along with Hawk pads, but as you can see it just wasn't enough.

It makes me really glad we beefed up our brakes last year, we've gotten 2 1/2 races out of our Frankenstein set of Wagner's so far.

Holy....Moley!!! Damn, were they riding the brakes the whole time? And are those the stock rotors?

Please tell me that those were from the end of the race.....

According to Phil, it only did a couple laps on day 1 because of a rusted out gas tank and the replacement fuel cell wasn't finished till after the checkered flag waved, but I think it ran all of day 2. Mike (from The Tunachuckers) said they replaced everything with new parts but it was all OEM spec, which meant 12 inch rotors and single piston calipers in the front with 12 inch drums in the back, obviously undersized for a car that big under the best of conditions to say nothing about a road course. To put things in perspective, the GTP's front brakes are the same size (with dual piston calipers) but the car weighs at least 1,000lbs less than the LTD.
