Techno suggestions

techno (with all the other undercategories like hardstyle etc)

Hardstyle is Hard Dance. If anything it belongs in the Trance section next to Hard Trance and Hard Acid Trance.
Yes, I'm that picky about people messing about with musical genres. If you can't tell, I'm a DJ and a sound designer and I've been known to get into arguments with friends over genres and musical theory. :p
And no, you can't say I'm a sad person.

Sorry. Read the whole thread, but missed that one for some reason...

I like electronic music a lot, but I find it very hard to know what genre a song belongs to. Most of it is due to a lack of interest from people here. I mean, in a mainstream level, e.g. radios, clubs, parties, electronic music goes as far as DJ Jose, David Ghetta and whatever else is a hit at the moment. Particularly here in Rio, we have Rio's funk too , which is a dirty, often obscene and criminally-related genre.
I wished a topic like this for ages, and almost created it... But I'm lazy :p It's late here, so I'll save some examples of what I like for tomorrow. It'll be good if more users post!

SVEN VATH FTW!

Here are a few artists and songs I've liked over the past year or so (I'm also "getting into" EDM):

A-Moe (I particularly like Little Red Riding Hood)
Groove Coverage (God is a Girl, 7 Years and 50 Days)
Hithouse (Move Your Feet to the Rhythm of the Beat, Jack to the Sound of the Underground)
DJ Volume - Spirit of Yesterday (a remix I like)
Gigi D'Agostino (The Riddle, Bla Bla Bla, I'll Fly With You, etc.)
Ken Laszlo - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (Italo Disco! Parts of it sound like something out of a 16-bit Sonic game)
Sam G - Take My Hand
Cornershop - Brimful of Asha (Fatboy Slim Full Remix)

Basshunter certainly isn't Techno and I wouldn't have said he produces Hard House either. I would put him down in the "Euro Trance / Euro Dance" bracket. His stuff is often bouncy, with simple cheesy riffs and regular use of cheesy vocal samples, these things sum up a lot of characteristics in the genres I just mentioned. You could also call his stuff commercial dance/trance, although purists would prefer the use of the word dance rather than trance and whilst dance might not be a technical genre, there are thousands of sub genres springing up constantly and I don't think you can say dance isn't a mainly electronic genre these days.

I find it's often a tendancy for a lot of American folk to call any form of electronic dance music "Techno" as a way to categorise it. This is not a criticism of you guys, just something I've found from my general exposure to American's.

If you want to explore a new genre, compilations aren't a bad way to start. The other way to broaden horizons is to check out some of the stations at Digitally Imported. There are plenty of genre based streams on there that will surely give you plenty of song names or artist names to write down and explore.

Most electronic music has segregated itself far too much with all these new random genres popping up. There is a constant narrowing of ways a DJ can play a set as you are often expected to stick to your chosen genre without wildly deviating. In the old days it was a lot more simple, you had different styles within one broad genre. The only real electronic music to maintain this has been Drum and Bass and it has been all the better for it. Instead of disecting itself into lots of little sub genres that only serve to restrict, it has maintained a much broader diversity which has benefitted the artists and DJ's alike.

Agreed. Trust me though, I've come a long way since starting this thread. I stick to internet radio stations mostly, especially hard.fm (LOVE hardstyle), and download random mixes that I find all over the web. There are some great ones out there, even if I never find out who the artists are.

I dunno much about other electronic music styles such as Techno, Progressive, Trance etc. But I know a lot about House music and some of its greatness. So LeVeL if you've got any question just ask ;)
