Spy Shots of 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan

well their still driving the 3 white/black camo cars around, i saw them turning out of a The Wendys on Ford road near 275 today, i think it was 9PM or so.

Personally i think the old Milan looked alot better based off the new pictures that have turned up.

I have my doubts about the Mondeo coming here as a Mercury. I still think that Ford should kill off Mercury, considering that they're pretty much just Fords with a bigger price tag. At least Lincoln has the MKX, which is somewhat different from the other cars of the Ford family.

I'm afraid you might be a little misguided. The Mondeo is (weirdly) a nicer looking car that drives somewhat bland (or atleast the base model) whereas the Fusion/Milan are actually rather nice, even exciting, to drive, but don't look that special. As well i think it would make more sense to kill the current Fords and use the Mercury parts instead. Maybe they should get rid of Mercury, but the materials used to make Mercurys are 10x nicer then that of the Fords, which are disgusting to say the least, so for that i hope they don't get rid of the Mercs.

Ford can't afford to pay the dealerships billions of dollars for killing the brand.

At the preview for the 2010 Ford Fusion, Frank Davis, Executive Director of North American Product Programs described Ford's goal as combingin best-in-class fuel economy with a much bolder appearance. The mid-size C/D segment in which the Fusion competes is the second largest in the U.S. market, accounting for 2.1 million vehicles last year including the best-selling Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, and Ford wants a bigger piece of it. The updated 2010 Fusion is technically a mid-cycle refresh, but it's much more than your typical face-lift. Three years after the Fusion and its Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ siblings debuted, Ford has given them a major stylistic overhaul fore and aft of the doors and inside the cabin. Its powertrains have also gone through a modernization program, which we already told you about a couple of weeks ago, so we'll skip over that here except to remind you that the 2010 Fusion can be had with a new hybrid drivetrain and a 3.5L V6 Sport model.

Fusion chief engineer JD Shanahan told Autoblog that the mid-size segment is the most cross-shopped in the auto industry. If buyers are willing to at least check out competing cars, then that leaves an opening to win them over, as well. In order to do that, Shanahan had to convince Ford executives to make more than the usual investment in these 2010 models. Shanahan told us that Fusion buyers want styling, a fun to drive experience and lots of powertrain choices. The most obvious change wrought on the new 2010 Fusion is front and center. This was the first car from Ford to get the now ubiquitous three-bar grille, and now it gets the most prominent rendition of this trademark styling cue yet.

Chief designer Darrell Beahmer describes the new Fusion as also having "more road presence" thanks to its oversized three-bar grille that's now integrated with the horizontal headlamps. The hood also has its own more subtle rendition of a "power dome" like the new 2010 Mustang. In this case, the profile of the dome runs from the base of the A-pillars around the front and echos the shape of the grille. In the lower fascia, the Fusion becomes the first North American Ford to pick up some hints of the popular kinetic design language from Europe. The two extra bars below the bumper of the current model have been discarded in favor of a trapezoidal opening and fog-lamp pockets that are look similar to ones found on the Euro Focus and Mondeo. The Sport model also gets a pair of extra inlet ports at both ends of the lower trapezoidal air intake.

The Fusion's tail-lamps have also been reshaped at the opposite end of the car. The reflectors have a molded in honeycomb shape that echoes the molding in the fog-lamp pockets up front. The rear vertical face of the trunk lid also has some new contouring, while the rear bumper has significantly reduced offset relative to the trunk lid, which cleans up the appearance of the rear end nicely. A piece of trim along the top of the license plate pocket is also body colored on all but the hybrid model, which is trimmed in chrome. Aside from the badging on the lower part of the front doors, that strip of chrome is the only element that visually distinguishes the hybrid from gas-powered Fusions.

Beahmer explained that Ford spoke wiht drivers who told them that they prefer to keep visual differences on the hybrid to a minimum. This strategy differs from most other manufacturers who assume hybrid buyers like to stand out. That may be part of the reason for the success of the Toyota Prius, and also why Honda is introducing two new dedicated hybrids in 2009, the Insight and CR-Z. Ford has followed the same pattern with the Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid and sold every single one it could build. But since production of the 2010 Fusion Hybrid and Milan Hybrid will be limited to 25,000 units annually, the lack of differentiation probably won't hurt sales.

The only thing that doesn't change for 2010 is the body work in the middle of the car, but everything inside is new. The seats have been redesigned to be more comfortable and are now made with soy-foam cushions. We'll reserve judgement on them until we can drive the car, but they certainly seemed firm and well shaped during our brief chance to sit in them.

The 2010 Fusion's dashboard is all-new with a center cluster that contains an optional and extremely large 8-inch LCD navigation screen. The trim panel on the center stack has been designed with openings for all the switch-gear and knobs to poke through from behind, which gives them a cleaner look than before. On the Fusion Sport, that same panel and other contrasting trim pieces get a colored, rubberized finish, while other models get a metallic finish. The storage bin in the center of the dashboard above the stack has also been retained from the previous model. Like in the new 2010 Mustang, all major interior surfaces of the Fusion and its siblings are now covered in a soft touch plastic, which gives a decidedly more upscale impression than before.

For audio-philes there will be an optional Sony stereo system with 5.1 channel surround sound, 390 watts and 12 speakers. Ford is also continuing to enhance its telematics system by adding a 911 assist system, automatic accident reporting and vehicle health reports. When a cell phone is paired with the SYNC system, the car will automatically call 911 if an accident occurs that causes the airbags to deploy. The 2010 Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ also get electronic stability control as standard equipment and blind spot warning with cross traffic alert as an option.

Finally, the battery for the hybrid model is mounted in the trunk up against the back seat. That means there's no fold down seat in the rear, but the new smaller battery pack also means that almost no space is lost compared to the conventional model. One other change to the hybrid is a knee airbag under the steering column to compensate for the additional weight of the car.

* For the 2010 model year, the new Ford Fusion lineup expands to include an all-new hybrid model that offers class-leading fuel economy, besting the Toyota Camry hybrid by at least 5 mpg in the city; innovative new SmartGauge? with EcoGuide coaches hybrid drivers to maximize fuel efficiency
* Fusion will offer three fuel-efficient gasoline engine options ? the Duratec 2.5-liter I-4 and enhanced 3.0-liter V-6 and 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engines. Fusions equipped with the 2.5-liter I-4 engine are expected to deliver at least 3 mpg better on the highway than the Honda Accord and 2 mpg better than the Toyota Camry. The 3.5-liter V-6 powers the all-new Fusion Sport model
* Class-exclusive features, including Ford SYNC?, SIRUIS? TravelLink?, BLIS? (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross Traffic Alert and Sony-branded audio set Fusion apart from other mid-size sedans

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2008 ? Ford's new 2010 Fusion is set to shake up the cut-throat mid-size sedan segment when it goes on sale early next year, bringing an all-new hybrid that will deliver the best fuel economy of any sedan in America, class-exclusive technologies including a blind spot detection and warning system and Ford SYNC?, plus the kind of proven quality and reliability that has been recognized by the top consumer groups and magazines.

"With the new Ford Fusion, we are offering consumers more choice, even better fuel economy and the leading quality and reliability that they have come to expect," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development. "But that isn't all ? we weren't satisfied with just matching the competition in the segment, we wanted to give consumers even more by delivering engaging driving dynamics and technologies that make the in-car experience more comfortable and connected."

Designed to stand out
Ford's attention to detail with the freshened Fusion begins with a new design that gives the car a sportier look and improved aerodynamics. The car's newly designed front end, including headlamps, grille and larger fog-lamp area, further enhance the sporty nature of the 2010 Fusion. Aerodynamic enhancements and new underbody shields further boost Fusion's fuel economy.

Overall, the wider, sportier look aims to make Fusion even more appealing to customers eager for a fun-to-drive mid-size sedan.

With all models, the interior design team created a more contemporary, technical look with metallic new finishes on the instrument panel that carries through on the center console, doors and steering wheel. A new shifter has been added, increasing the Fusion's sportiness and comfort.

The seats received a makeover, as well. The seat contour has been revised, with more side support and overall a softer seat with smoother bolsters and more-textural inserts. The seats also feature contrasting stitching and tipped leather inserts to give the Fusion even more attitude, befitting this mid-size sedan.

The gauge cluster has been designed with 3-D elements to create a jewel-like appearance, similar to a fine watch. Drivers will be greeted by a new "welcome" sequence that makes the Fusion seem as if it's coming to life. Gauge needles sweep back and forth as the lighting and new chimes come on. The ambient lighting system offers the option of illuminating the front and rear footwells and front cup holders.

Fuel-efficient powertrain lineup
Both the inline four-cylinder and V-6 engines are upgraded for both improved fuel economy and power. Fusions equipped with Ford's new 2.5-liter I-4 engine are expected to deliver at least a 5 mpg improvement versus the 2009 model on the highway, resulting in fuel economy that is at least 3 mpg better than the Honda Accord and 2 mpg better than the Toyota Camry.

The 2.5-liter I-4 engine horsepower and torque also have been improved from the car's outgoing 2.3-liter 4-cylinger engine, jumping to 175 hp and 172 ft.-lbs. of torque from the previous 160 hp and 156 ft-lbs. As a result, 0-60 performance improves by more than a second, now topping Camry and Accord.

The 2010 Fusion features an all six-speed transmission lineup, including for the new 2.5-liter I-4 engine, which is available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The previous 2.3-liter I-4 in the Fusion was available with only a five-speed transmission.

The additional gear on the I-4 provides better drivability and performance as well as fuel savings, said Matt Hettenhouse, Powertrain Team Leader for the Fusion. "The gear ratios and the overall span of the transmissions allow us to have a more-efficient shift schedule," he said.

The first gear can be made a little deeper, which provides smoother acceleration. At the top end, a higher gear allows the engine to run slower in highway conditions, which also aids fuel economy.

Ford's proven Duratec 30 3.0-liter V-6 engine also improved on the 2010 model, delivering highway fuel economy gains of at least 1 mpg city and 2 mpg highway. Horsepower in the 3.0-liter V-6 also increased to 240 hp and 222 ft.,-lbs, up from 221 hp and 205 ft.-lbs. in the previous version. The 3.0-liter engine is now Flex Fuel-capable and can run on E-85 ethanol, which delivers even more horsepower ? up to 250hp.

Front-wheel drive and on-demand all-wheel drive are available with models with a 3.0-liter engine and with the new Fusion Sport 3.5-liter engine.

The Fusion Sport 3.5-liter V-6 has 263 horsepower, a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift. The versatility in the powertrain systems creates a wide range of options for customers designed to fit every need.

The 2010 Fusion now comes equipped with Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system on 2.5- and 3.0-liter models, improving the driving dynamics of the vehicle while delivering greater fuel savings because the steering system is operated by the electrical system rather than the engine. Additionally, EPAS provides customers with improved steering feel and reduced low-speed efforts that when coupled with a nearly 1 foot smaller turning circle for 2010 makes parking a cinch.

In addition to improvements in the 2010 Fusion's steering, handling and improved brake pedal feel, the Fusion team also took a look at how to improve the comfort of the car, including reducing wind noise and road noise.

Hood insulators, inner and outer dash absorbers, new carpet and glass, revised sealing baffles, additional sound deadening in the trunk, new interior material and new headliner material are among the improvements made.

Improved body and door sealing also contribute to Fusion's best-in-class standing in wind noise. Overall, the reduction in wind noise and road noise puts Fusion near some of the best luxury cars in terms of quietness and best-in-class speech intelligibility. Wind noise, for example, is 3 sones better than Camry and Accord. Models with the I-4 engine are class leaders in wind noise and road noise.

All-new hybrid model
For the 2010 model year, the Ford Fusion adds an all-new hybrid model. The Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids join the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, doubling both the size and volume of Ford's hybrid lineup.

The 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid will join the Mariner as the second hybrid offering from Ford's brand for people who love Jill Wagner. The next-generation hybrid system, similar to the one found in the Mariner, will couple Ford's 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor backed by a new smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery. The new hybrid should be capable of running on pure electric mode at speeds up to 47 MPH, meaning the car can operate in most city and neighborhood conditions without using the gas engine for direct power. This means one full tank of gas could theoretically propel the Milan 700 miles in city driving. There's no official number on the mileage of the Milan Hybrid, but we've been told to expect around five miles per gallon better than the Camry Hybrid's highway performance (34 mpg), which would put it between 38 and 40 mpg, an impressive number for sure. Additionally, the Milan will get Ford's futuristic Smartgauge LCD instrument panel.

For the 2010 model year, the Mercury Milan adds an all-new hybrid model. The Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids join the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, doubling both the size and volume of Ford?s hybrid lineup.
?Offering consumers more fuel-efficient vehicle choices, including improving and increasing our hybrid vehicle offerings, is part of Ford?s broad plan to deliver technology solutions for affordable fuel economy for millions,? said Derrick Kuzak, Ford?s group vice president for Global Product Development.

?With the new Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids, we are now able to offer even better range of travel on battery power at a greater speed, thanks to a more efficient, seamless transition between the battery-powered motor and gasoline-driven engine,? he said. ?These new hybrids will exceed expectations on all fronts ? fuel efficiency, comfort, convenience and drivability.?

The Ford Hybrid team has developed a powertrain system that combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the customer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy. Additionally, the propulsion system for the Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion hybrids transitions between gas and electric power and back more efficiently and seamlessly.

The overall system upgrade allows the Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion hybrids to operate longer at higher speeds in electric mode. The hybrid vehicles can operate up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately twice as fast as some competitors. Plus, the city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be more than 700 miles.

The next-generation hybrid system features:
? New 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (155 horsepower/136 lb.-ft. of torque) running the proven Atkinson cycle mated to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission or e-CVT.
? Intake Variable Cam Timing (iVCT), which allows the vehicle to more seamlessly transition from gas to electric mode and vice-versa. The spark and cam timing are varied according to the engine load to optimize efficiency and emissions.
? Enhanced electronic throttle control reduces airflow on shutdowns, reducing fueling needs on restarts.
? Wide-band lambda sensor analyzes the air-fuel ratio and adjusts the lean/rich mixture accordingly to keep the system in balance and to minimize emissions.
? A new smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery has been optimized to produce 20 percent more power. Improved chemistry allows the battery to be run at a higher temperature and it is cooled using cabin air.
? An added variable voltage converter boosts the voltage to the traction battery to operate the motor and generator more efficiently.
? A new high-efficiency converter provides 14 percent increased output to accommodate a wider array of vehicle features.
? Smarter climate control system monitors cabin temperature and only runs the gas engine as needed to heat the cabin; it also includes an electric air conditioning compressor to further minimize engine use.
? The regenerative brake system captures the energy normally lost through friction in braking and stores it. Nearly 94 percent energy recovery is achieved by first delivering full regenerative braking followed by friction brakes during city driving.
? A simulator brake actuation system dictates brake actuation and delivers improved brake pedal feel compared to the previous generation braking system.

?Because our hybrid can run at a much higher speed in electric mode, you can do so much more in city-driving situations,? said Gil Portalatin, Hybrid Applications Manager. ?Under the right conditions, you can drive in your neighborhood or mall parking lots without using a drop of gasoline.?

The Milan Hybrid also offers drivers a way to be more connected to the hybrid driving experience thanks to Ford?s SmartGauge with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster execution that helps coach them on how to optimize performance of their hybrid.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide features two, high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on either side of the analog speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant miles-per-gallon. Growing leaves and vines track and reward the driver?s efficiency.

EcoGuide uses a multi-layered approach to coach the driver to maximum fuel efficiency. A tutorial mode built into the display that helps the driver learn about the instrument cluster and the hybrid in a whimsical way that does not overpower.

For instance, drivers can choose one of four data screens to choose the information level displayed during their drives. They are:
? Inform: Fuel level and battery charge status
? Enlighten: Adds electric vehicle mode indicator and tachometer
? Engage: Adds engine output power and battery output power
? Empower: Adds power to wheels, engine pull-up threshold and accessory power consumption

All levels can show instant fuel economy, fuel economy history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, what gear the car is in and trip data (trip fuel economy, time-elapsed fuel economy and miles to empty). The engine coolant temperature indicator turns green when engine conditions are warm enough to allow engine pull-down.

Several other elements help differentiate the Milan Hybrid from its gas-powered sibling, including unique hybrid ?road and leaf? badging on both sides and the rear of the vehicle; unique 16-inch, eight-spoke wheels; eco-friendly seat fabric made from post-industrial 100 percent recycled materials; and a standard 110-volt power outlet.

The 2010 Mercury Milan isn't as curvy as Jill Wagner, but it does benefit from a more shapely profile than its predecessor. The general buyers who opt for the new Milan over its Ford or Lincoln siblings will probably be more interested in that visual enhancement than the upgraded 2.5-liter four-banger or the revised V6 now putting out 240 HP, up from 221 HP in the previous model. While enthusiasts may look forward to the new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, the average non-enthusiast buyers will likely care more about the availability Ford SYNC, Sirius Travel-link and a back-up camera. Whether enthusiast or not, everyone should be grateful for the 4 to 5 MPG bounce on the four-banger. Unlike the Fusion, there has been no announcement of a "sport" mode for the Milan, indicative of the kind of audience Mercury expects the car should attract.

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 19, 2008 ? The Mercury Milan builds on a strong foundation of quality and reliability, adding to the mix for the 2010 model year an all-new hybrid model, more fuel-efficient gasoline powertrain options, class-exclusive technologies and a more refined, sophisticated design.

?The Milan has been a strong part of the Mercury lineup since its initial launch and has helped attract more consumers to dealer showrooms,? said John Felice, general manager, Ford, Lincoln Mercury Marketing. ?For sophisticated consumers looking for a stylish hybrid, the Milan now offers them the most fuel-efficient hybrid sedan in its class.?

Chief designer Darrell Behmer and his team had the advantage of working from a vehicle that?s been lauded by consumers and consumer groups. ?Our approach was to build upon the Milan?s strengths ? to improve rather than reinvent,? Behmer said. ?From a design standpoint, we wanted to clarify the design, making it cleaner and more modern.?

The changes to the exterior design were focused on the grille, and front and rear fascias. The chin was pulled forward and the fascia was pulled down to give the 2010 Mercury Milan a wider, sportier look. Those changes as well as substantial underbody work made for a cleaner, more aerodynamic car.

The two-tone look on the interior continues as a Milan signature, with satin-aluminum accents and a wood finish around the center stack. The Milan features Dark Charcoal Black, Medium Light Stone and Camel as interior choices through the Premier Series, which includes embossed leather.

An improved seat design with a new perforation pattern has been added as well. The seat contour itself was revised, with more side support to help create a softer seat overall.

Door sill plates mirror the satin-aluminum look as well. Drivers also are greeted with contrasting stitching on the steering wheel. Ice Blue lighting now illuminates the cluster and instrument panel display.

More powertrain options, more horsepower, better fuel economy
Both the inline four-cylinder and V-6 engines are upgraded, with the four-cylinder engine increased to 2.5 liters and the 3-liter V-6 increasing its horsepower rating from 221 to 240. Each engine improves fuel economy as well, up to 4 or 5 mpg depending on the model.

The 2.5-liter I-4 engine, which improved its 0-60 mph time by more than 1 second to achieve best-in-class performance, is available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, up from five speeds.

?The gear ratios and the overall span of the transmissions allow us to have a more-efficient shift schedule,? said Matt Hettenhouse, powertrain team leader for the Milan. The first gear can be made a little deeper, which provides smoother acceleration. At the top end, a higher gear allows the engine to run slower in highway conditions, which also aids fuel economy.

The innovative Easy Fuel? capless fuel filler system also is standard. This industry-exclusive feature helps to reduce evaporative emissions that create smog and global warming. When fueling is completed, and the fuel pump nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

Better handling in a quieter, more-comfortable ride
Bringing a premium driving experience to the Mercury Milan was one of the goals for the team. For the 2010 model, strides were made in steering and handling, turning circle (better by about 1 foot) and an improved brake pedal feel. Upgraded 17-inch painted aluminum wheels are another performance and appearance enhancement standard on the Premier.

The 2010 Mercury Milan team also took a look at how to improve the comfort of the car. ?We made a major improvement on interior quietness,? said Chief Engineer J.D. Shanahan. Hood insulators, inner and outer dash absorbers, new carpet, revised ceiling baffles, additional sound deadening in the trunk, new interior material and new headliner material are among the improvements made.

In addition, improved body and door sealing defends and improves upon Milan?s best-in-class standing in wind noise. Reductions in wind noise and road noise gives Mercury Milan drivers the level of quiet luxury they demand.

With design refinements to the exterior creating a sportier look as well as upgraded technology and materials inside, the 2010 Mercury Milan expands on the value package that makes it a leader in the mid-size car segment.

Staying connected
New technology features available on the 2010 Milan include:
? Blind Spot Information System (BLISTM) with Cross Traffic Alert, which can help provide extra confidence to drivers in parking lots by alerting drivers sooner of nearby traffic while backing out. It uses two multiple beam radar modules, which are packaged in the rear quarter panels. The radar detects moving objects within a 65-foot range from either side of the vehicle. The radar identifies when a vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone and illuminates an indicator light on the corresponding side-view mirror providing a warning that a vehicle is approaching. An audible alert is sounded as well.
? SYNC: The voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. The system fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities ? plus new 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report provided with no monthly fees.
o 911 Assist: When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, the system is ready to assist in placing a call directly to a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag-deploying accident. The key advantage of SYNC 911 Assist is speed, as calls are placed directly to local 911 operators.
o Vehicle Health Report (VHR): SYNC gathers relevant information from the major vehicle control modules and packages diagnostic data into a usable format in a matter of minutes. That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer?s paired and operable mobile phone.
? Voice-Activated Navigation, which integrates several functions including voice recognition destination entry, climate control and SIRIUS satellite radio into one easy-to-use system, displaying them on an 8-inch touch-screen display. The navigation system?s text-to-speech function calls out street names while in route to a destination and reads incoming text messages when the system is linked to SYNC. The integrated DVD player is capable of reading CD-Audio, MP3 CDs, DVD, DVD-Audio and DVD-ROM (for digital map updates). A music jukebox function stores more than 150 hours of music. The screen even can be customized with personal photos.
? SIRIUS Travel Link?, an industry-leading technology that, when combined with the voice-activated navigation system will provide users with real-time traffic data with accident and incident information, coast-to-coast weather data including current conditions and five-day forecasts, and fuel price information for over 120,000 gas stations. Travel Link also offers sports scores and schedules and a listing of more than 4,500 movie theaters with movie times, theater addresses, movie synopses and more.
? Reverse Camera System, which mounts a small camera on the decklid that is activated when Milan is shifted into reverse, giving the driver a clear view behind the vehicle. ?The video image is displayed in the optional navigation screen on Milans equipped with that option or in the self-dimming rearview mirror vehicles without navigation.

All Mercury Milan models will be built alongside the Ford Fusion at Ford?s Hermosillo (Mexico) Stamping and Assembly Plant and will be in dealers in spring 2009.

Since platform pals the 2010 Ford Fusion and 2010 Mercury Milan get matching updates, it stands to reason their higher class sibling the 2010 Lincoln MKZ would be getting a visit from Ford's refresh fairies and these are the results. The MKZ gets Lincoln MKS in its Fusion with an appropriation of the new dual-nostril, waterfalling '38 Zephyr grille. As the top-range model in the lineup the MKZ wears the most lavish interior, the smoothest suspension, and the biggest price tag. Read through the press release below and decide for yourself, does the new MKZ provide enough of a upgrade to warrant the additional purchase price? You decide.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2008 ? Customers who have come to equate Lincoln with elegant, modern design, unparalleled comfort, unrivaled features and top quality have still more reason to favor the brand: the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ mid-size sedan.

?The new MKZ improves on the success of the current vehicle with Lincoln?s new signature look, appointments that amplify and expand the Lincoln portfolio and a faster, more refined powertrain,? said Mark Fields, Ford?s president of The Americas.
New for 2010, the MKZ features a new sport version with special sport suspension tuning with stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels, unique grille, darkened headlamps, a decklid MKZ badge with a red ?Z? and an interior with contrasting piping and unique appliqu?s.

The new Lincoln MKZ also offers segment-exclusive features, including first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS?) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), which makes navigating traffic and parking lots safer and easier.

BLIS tracks vehicles in the blind-spot zones on either side of the vehicle using two multiple-beam radar modules behind the rear fenders. Indicator lights in the outside rear-view mirror on both sides of the vehicle warn the driver when a vehicle enters the defined blind-spot zone, extending from the side mirror to 10 feet behind the vehicle and 10 feet away from the vehicle.

CTA uses the BLIS radar sensors to alert the driver of approaching traffic while in reverse and backing out of a parking spot. The CTA tracks up to 65 feet on either side of the vehicle and warns the driver through both audible and visual alerts.

In addition to this new technology for mid-size sedans, MKZ offers SYNC, Next-Generation Voice-Activated Navigation, keyless entry, Easy Fuel? capless fuel filler, THX-branded audio? and adaptive headlamps.

The new MKZ also features Lincoln signature design elements, including the split-wing grille and thinner wraparound head lamps for a wider, sportier look. Its chamfered front fascia mirrors the MKS, with a sculpted hood and ridges flowing into the A-pillar. In the rear, which features a new decklid, LED taillamps accentuate the width of the car, separated by the Lincoln star.

The Lincoln MKZ?s presence is enhanced by 17-inch aluminum wheels, available 17-inch chrome wheels, and available 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, which are included in the Sport Appearance Package with sport-tuned suspension.
Inside, MKZ?s cabin reflects and even more upscale look, featuring more chrome, genuine aluminum and wood depending on the trim package, an all-new instrument panel, detailed touches including new welcome lighting, chimes, tuxedo stitching on luxury leather seats and Bridge of Weir leather.

The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland, pioneered on the classic Lincoln Continental Mark II and used on the MKS, wraps the MKZ seats. The MKZ leather is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through.

The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a buttery soft hand, and Bridge of Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

?We?ve increased the luxury feel and improved on what was already a great interior,? said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. ?We have a new interior theme with all-new primary touchpoints, complemented by new features and technologies that make the 2010 Lincoln MKZ stand out in the competitive mid-size segment.?

Additions or improvements to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ interior include:
Armrest clamshell storage
New instrument cluster layout with center speedometer
New door trim with 360-degree door handles
Redesigned center stack with high-mounted, Next-Generation Navigation system
Leather-wrapped steering wheel with real wood insert
Available perforated suede seat style
Interior schemes include Dark Charcoal or Steel Gray with Swirl Walnut accents, or Light Camel with Olive Ash wood accents

Technology and information at your fingertips
The new Lincoln MKZ is more than just a pretty face and striking new interior. New technology features help Lincoln?s new mid-size sedan stand out, too. They include:
SYNC: The voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. The system fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities ? plus new 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report provided with no monthly fees.
911 Assist: When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, the system is ready to assist in placing a call directly to a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag-deploying accident. The key advantage of SYNC 911 Assist is speed, as calls are placed directly to local 911 operators.
Vehicle Health Report (VHR): SYNC gathers relevant information from the major vehicle control modules and packages diagnostic data into a usable format in a matter of minutes. That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer?s paired and operable mobile phone.
SIRIUS? Travel Link?, an industry-leading technology that, when combined with the voice-activated navigation system will provide users with real-time traffic data with accident and incident information, coast-to-coast weather data including current conditions and five-day forecasts, and fuel price information for over 120,000 gas stations.
Travel Link also offers sports scores and schedules and a listing of more than 4,500 movie theaters with movie times, theater addresses, movie synopses and more.
Reverse Camera System mounts a small camera on the decklid that is activated when the Lincoln MKZ is shifted into reverse, giving the driver a clear view behind the vehicle.

The video image is displayed in the optional navigation screen on Lincoln MKZs equipped with that option or in the self-dimming rearview mirror vehicles without navigation.
Ambient Lighting System is displayed around the footwells, cup holders, door map pockets, door release handles, door and instrument accents and scuff plates ? plus special ?Welcome? and ?Farewell? sequential lighting.
THX II Premium Certified Audio System with 5.1 Surround Sound, which is provided by a 12-channel amplifier that delivers 600 watts to 14 strategically placed speakers, including two subwoofers. A center channel speaker array features THX Slot Speaker? technology, which allows for a wider sound image and better control of how music distributed throughout the vehicle?s acoustically engineered cabin. In addition, the system features a 10 GB hard drive jukebox, allowing Lincoln owners to store up to 2,400 of their favorite music tracks.

Other features for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ include:
Rain-sensing wipers, which detect moisture on the windshield and are activated.
A new cabin air filter, which removes respiratory irritants and toxins caused by traffic and industrial pollution. Additionally, the air filter protects the HVAC/climate control system by blocking water and moisture.
Segment-exclusive Adaptive HID headlamps, which rotate according to speed and steering inputs to allow greater visibility around turns
SOS Post Crash Alert, which activates the horn, emergency flashers, automatically unlocks doors and turns on the interior/puddle lamps when an air bag is deployed. The system activates the emergency flashers when a spinout is detected.

Faster engine performance, strong fuel economy
The award-winning 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engine powers the 2010 Lincoln MKZ, delivering 263 horsepower and 249 pounds-feet of torque. The 3.5-liter uses a compact, lightweight dual-overhead cam valvetrain for peak power and smooth operation at high RPMs.

This engine also incorporates intake variable cam timing to optimize valve timing for a smooth idle and an impressive broad torque curve with good power.

The six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, which is front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive availability, is standard on the 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Powertrain performance is improved dramatically, with 0-60 mph times dropping from 7.7 to 7.1 seconds.

The engine ? and the MKZ itself ? is quieter. Every piece of sound packing was redone.

?The customer definitely should notice how quiet the new MKZ is,? said Chief Engineer J.D. Shanahan. ?That?s important ? especially in the luxury sedan buyers who perceive that quietness equates to quality.?

The MKZ engineering team also concentrated on the engine mount subsystem, finding the sound that balances sportiness and luxury, said Matt Hettenhouse, powertrain team leader.

A high 10.3:1 compression ratio and aluminum cylinder heads designed for high air flow and optimized combustion help complete the package, supporting the engine?s ability to deliver great performance and fuel economy, along with low emissions.

Unique to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ are re-engineered resonators on the air-induction system. ?They deliver the powerful, refined sound Lincoln MKZ customers expect,? Hettenhouse said.

The six-speed transmission allows for lower early gears for better acceleration and taller high gears for better highway mileage. Downshifts are locked out to protect the engine from over-revving. The ?enhanced overdrive cancel? mode locks out the fifth and sixth gears, allows shifts at higher speed for more engine braking and downshifts for ?grade assist? functionality.

Unique tuning, too
The 2010 Lincoln MKZ was completely revised and uniquely tuned for ride comfort.
The team changed the rear suspension in the lower control arm control point to move the roll center closer to the center of gravity, which improved the ride-handling characteristics. A hydraulic variable-flow steering pump changes the flow rate at lower speeds to give better response, improving the turning circle and easier parking efforts.

The Lincoln MKZ?s available all-wheel drive (AWD) system has been retuned for better traction and lower noise, vibration and harshness. The system uses an electro-mechanical clutch and employs two basic modes of torque transfer ? pre-emptive torque (before wheel slip) and slip-control torque (after wheel slip). This dual system gives the driver confidence in any situation, while the suspension has been specially tuned to be more neutral when cornering.

?When the Lincoln MKZ accelerates, even lightly, from a stop on any surface ? dry pavement, wet pavement, sand, gravel, ice, mud ? pre-emptive torque is transferred to the rear wheels,? said Jim Fritz, AWD product development engineer. ?As an added measure to control front wheel slip on slippery surfaces, slip control torque is added to equalize front and rear wheel speeds.?

The AWD system works in harmony with brake traction control to deliver more confidence to Lincoln MKZ customers. Ford?s AdvanceTrac electronic stability control keeps drivers in command as well.

?The driving experience has been improved, delivering a better ride and vehicle control,? Shanahan said. ?Ride enhancements, a new sport package, new technologies, the signature Lincoln design and a strong quality story help the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ set a new standard in mid-size luxury sedans.?

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ is built at Ford?s Hermosillo (Mexico) Stamping and Assembly Plant and will be in dealer showrooms in spring 2009.

I Don't mind the grill, in fact I quite like the front ends of all 3 of the cars. The back end of the Ford is quite nice too, the back end of the Mercury is a bit Seat Cordoba, but bearable. The back end of the Lincoln, on the other hand, is just WTF? Is there some equation that relates the premium-ness to the width of the taillights or what? Ford - narrow, Mercury - wider, Lincoln - superultramegawide. Either way, it looks awful.

I must be the only guy in the world that likes the 3-bar grille. I really like where they've gone with the Fusion and MKZ, not so much the Milan.

Hey! I though I was the only one who liked Ford's Tri-bar Grille's :)

Like the Fusion, like the MKZ (I do like the ultrawide taillights, 10x better than the current MKZ taillights) and the Mercury Milan is 'eh'

Now if they made an AWD Shousion I would be all over it.

I liked the olf Fusion's 3-bar grill better. I fail to understand the purpose of the Mercury. While I dig the front end of the MKZ, I liked the old one, too...but the whole car just looks like "MKS, jr" but without the remotely attractive taillights of the MKS. I kinda wish they would have modified the Fushion Hybrid's gauge screen to the sport model....the interiors of all 3 are kinda boring...especially the lincolns.

Hmmm. 263hp V6 and AWD with a six-speed auto. And its quite handsome too. That sounds like a nice car!

Ford has basically replaced every model now. In the next 2 years we are getting new:

F150
Mustang
Fusion
AND the Fiesta

Mustang fusion and F150 look amazing, IMO and with the performance versions of the Mustang and the new Raptor...ford will be doing damn well I think. We shall certainly see.
