DiRT 3

Do you have to play the gymkhana events in order to continue the game? This game actually sounds and seems lots of fun but I just ordered L.A. Noire ._. I'll be buying this from the sales at least.

You need to do the Gymkhana tutorials (I'm at the point where I can't make progress otherwise), and I heard there's one event after those that you absolutely must do to make progress.

well, they have done what i consider an asshole move, same thing EA did, if you buy the game used on PS3 you will have to pay to use the online mode. They call it VIP mode but its just making you pay more money. Im not buying from a company that does that shit, its just cheap IMO.

As far as the game, well, im on season 2 and im thinking its fun so far. would have been a good rental if blockbuster didnt die but that about it.

I think a boycott should be organized for the next game that is 'released' with launch paid-DLC and/or this bullshit 'VIP mode.' Somebody has to tell the publishers that it is not ok to abuse their customers.

My strategy lately is to mostly not buy games at launch for full price. Paid DLC is fine when the game only costs $20.... but I'm not going to drop $60 on something that is incomplete from launch (and of course it's different if new content is added later a la GTA4).

Oh boo fucking hoo. PC users haven't been able to sell/trade games in over 10 years and you don't see us complaining.

When you buy the game new, it comes with a code, much like PC games do. You enter it and it ties it to your account, much like PC games do.

You console users are so entitled.

Hey! I'm not! :p

I don't have a huge problem with online codes. But launch day DLC, that's another issue...<_<

Try paying $100 for a game (when the exchange rate is AUD$1:US$1.05) and having that bullshit

Random example, how much is Test Drive Unlimited 2 on Steam? (I can't seem to get to Steam's Australian page, must be region-sensitive). I'm just curious if the older, discounted games are still more expensive. It's $20 USD here.

I agree with that! As many others have said, DLC should be use to prolong a games life, not force users to pay out of their nose.

I don't have anything against launch day DLC. It's pretty much as if they would release a 'limited edition' box with few extra cars like Gran Turismo or Forza do.

Then again, this is from someone who has never bought any DLC content for any game as a separate purchase (I got the expansions for GTA4 as a bundle with my Xbox) and generally only judge a game by how it is in the box it came in and not by what extras I can get if I pay some more.

Back to the game itself... I found the Gymkhana events to be reasonably entertaining. Also, I found that I still hate Trailblazer events... Why, oh why, could they not give me a chance to at least enlarge and zoom out the minimap so that I would not need to glance at it every ten seconds while trying to drive an 800bhp monster through some high speed corners...

Isn't the DLC free? It came with my copy. :?

There's a pretty big difference in "few extra cars" and four DLC packs, two being track packs. Plus, most of the time limited editions come with something a little more tangible, whether it be a diecast, artbook, soundtrack, etc.

For anyone wanting to know what we refer to:

Four DLC packs for DiRT 3 have been revealed via leaked trophy lists from the PS3 version of Codemasters' upcoming rally racer.
Trophy lists for the unannounced DLC popped up on PS3Trophies.org over the weekend revealing that multiple DLC packs are already on the way for the next DiRT, including a Mud and Guts Car Pack, Power and Glory Car Pack, Monte Carlo Track Pack, and an X Games Asia Track Pack.

Each pack includes four additional trophies, with new cars and tracks (including Shibuya) divvied up between them. There's no mention of a price or release date for either of the packs.

The extensive amount of DLC could be Codies' way of making up for a missed opportunity with DiRT 2. Other than timesaver unlock keys, Codemasters didn't release any downloadable content for its previous rally game.

DiRT 3 launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC tomorrow, 24th May. It's well worth taking for a spin.

To be fair to Codemasters, there isn't a defined release date yet. But obviously it's coming very soon.

This is the picture that gave away the Monte DLC

Can make out a Colin McRae pack just above it too, probably something to do with the missing Mk2 escort...

Just picked it up on PS3. Really like the design and soundtrack, sound effects are great.
Doesn't really look as good as dirt 2 though. Lots of low detail objects and textures about the place. People and trackside objects look like what you would see in a top down strategy game like Company of heroes or World at war. (Water effects through puddles are particularly bad)...

Handling is a good step up from D2, lifting off from high revs mid corner is pretty unforgiving. You really need to feather the throttle alot this time round.
I can't work out why they give you more rep points for which car you choose. In the stadium truck races, the trucks are all the same but with one they give you 100 points and the other something like 400. Everyones already mentioned the short rally stages.
Lots of dudes and awesomes at the start but not as annoying as Dirt 2.
Pretty disappointed the Escort is gone :(
Haven't got around to testing the G25 yet.

feel is pretty good on g25.. driving is alot better then the previous dirts... still feels like you got way to much grip tho, but it doesn't claim to be a sim either.

I'm liking the title, it feels very well rounded.
Despite my early reservations Gymkhana has been done in a fun way, not entirely sure it's too realistic cos I couldn't do any of those tricks in a real car, but fun nonetheless.

Did a full review on my blog if anyone wants to check it out

Must be a console thing. I've been playing DiRT 2 for the past couple weeks and DiRT 3 looks significantly better. I'll make up some comparison screenshots this weekend.

It's based on sponsor, not the car really. And the higher point bonuses are usually harder goals (but not always).

I thought the textures were pretty sweet... the tracks look great, particularly the vegetation and trees
