Study shows that black cars are 12% more likely to be involved in a crash than white ones.

WHITE is the safest car colour in all driving conditions while black is the least safe, a study to be released today has found.

Higher risk of crashing

The Vehicle Colour Study shows there's a 12 per cent higher risk of being involved in a crash in a black car than a white one.

Grey and silver are next in line, with an 11 and 10 per cent higher crash risk.

The study also found that crashes were 7 per cent more likely to occur with blue, red and maroon cars than lighter colours such as cream, yellow and beige.

Study examined serious crashes

The study, conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre, examined crashes which involved death, injury or the towing of a vehicle between 1987 and 2004.

Centre senior researcher Stuart Newstead said yesterday: "Popular dark colours, greens, blues, blacks, blend in with the road.

"They are quite popular, people should think carefully about them."

NRMA motoring and services vehicle specialist Jack Haley said that unlike previous international studies, this one had taken into account other factors that influenced crashes including driver demographics.

Dont give him any ideas.
That man came make an issue when there is none.

Nice school bus, cvg. That toast sure looks good doesn't it? :p

Well, yeah. Who buys white cars? Old people. Boring people. Safe drivers who don't care about colors as long as it's average and inoffensive and won't draw any undue attention. Who buys black cars? People who want to drive something badass and scary and intimidating. Those who think that black will make them the new dark warrior of the night or something, and will drive like that to prove it.

Fig. A. Your grandmother. Drives "something white" (her words). Loves to knit and bake cookies and feed her cats and other stereotypically grandmothery things. Hasn't changed the oil in 4 years. Doesn't know what oil is.

Fig. B.
Your badass drug-dealing neighbor with 6 tattoos and a 6-page police record. Listens to Whitesnake as he rages on as a fierce warrior in the Still of the Night. Banned from 6 middle schools.

Case closed.

Or me. I bought a white Civic because it was the only color that had the VP package (cheap) with a 5 speed and side impact air bags. I would have liked it in blue, but after seeing the beating my car takes from morons who can't park and the carnage from industrial fallout I'm glad I got white. It doesn't show dirt or scratches nearly as much as darker colors.

I also like white cars in the desert because they stay cooler.

Heh, right on cue.

I'll get the camcorder ready.

I would rather punch whoever sped up that animation.

Silver cars are better for that. Though I can attest to silver cars being hard to see in torrnetial downpours. I've seen a car that was 50' at best from me, all but dissappear except for his tail lights. Fun times. However, number 1 thing to do in that situation is to turn on your hazards. They're bright enough not to get faded out by the rain like tail lights will.

And I agree about hurting whoever sped up that animation.

Lol, white car in snowstorm up north... bad idea.

If it's that bad out then no color will stand out. My mom drives an S80 (white) and it stands out fine in the snow; of course she uses her rear fog light the way it should be used. I hate, hate, hate, HATE Americans who drive around in German cars with the fog lights on because they like the way it makes their car look. Listen, dipshits, you have a foglight on the back too, and it's fuckin' annoying to those of us behind you in traffic. You don't look cool, you look like an ignorant dickhead who doesn't know what any of the switches in his car do.

I would have thought this would be the most dangerous color.

I had the proper speed animation, but I was to lazy to get it re-hosted on a photo site so blame YTMND. :)

Seriously though... I wonder if it's the actual color thats the problem, or the type of people that choose these colors and their driving. Though they do mention taking into account driver demographics so...

I hate dark colored cars simply because I always have one behind me when visibility is low and the moron doesn't have their lights on. I have to spend most of my time looking in my mirrors making sure they're not going to attempt some idiotic move that I would easily be able to see if they'd just turn on their darn lights.
