Kickass article right here.8)

For cars that are pretty much the same, why is the Olds so much slower than the Monte Carlo?

Pretty cool article, came out a mere 2 months before I came out (of my mom).

It's the engines.

Numbers don't tell the whole story, but they produce the same amount of power/torque. The Olds actually produces peak power at a lower rpm and torque at the same rpm. I'm surprised there is over a full second difference in the 0-60mph time.

Me like a lot. :D Buick turbo V6 FTW.

I feel that neither the Chevy of Olds should of had the SS and 442 badges respectivly. Mainly because neither car could live up to their namesakes. It was a little different with the Buick because they weren't trying to live up to the GS/GSX namesake, but they still delivered the goods. And then they put out the GNX...

But for the love of God are they...............ugly

Quite a giggle when less than 12 Months later Holden (GM Australia) releases a car thats quicker, more refined (considerably in the engine stakes) and looks a hell of a lot better, both inside and out....where the hell did the interior designers come? The 60's?

/must find VLT mag articles and scan them......also had one with a VL V8 vs the yank tanks....

Edit: And in modded form today would (probably) be more than a match for a GNX......erm what times do they run these days?

In modded form they can make gigantic amounts of power.

The Holden version of the v6, if I'm not mistaken, was one of the revised v6. The US saw 3 revisions of that engine between 88 and 2008 (yes we still use it here, the buying public doesn't want it to go away).

The rest of the car, I don't doubt, the 80's was a shitty time for American cars, though better than the 70's.

BTW, please scan some of those articles, I'd like to see them.

There was never a Holden V6 turbo, this was the infernal datsun motor.....We had a supercharged V6 in the VS-VZ Commodore.....

So does a Nissan RB30ET.....plus the VLT guys have the advantage of being able to use DOHC cylinder heads (if you really want) and all the good bits from Nissan Skylines....

Then you had the same engine/engine series that I do. That being the 3800 in NA and Supercharged version.

Not quite (My personal car is the Nissan powered version)

The Australian V6's that where made in Fishermans Bend, Victoria where a mish mash of Diffrent American motors. I know of several cases of woe that befell people trying to put the yank built engines into their Commodores ;) Our early engines where a hybrid of serries 1 motors and non serries 1 motors. The computer system was a totally diffrent.

The serries 2 motors, or ecotechs where also built here. Again they are diffrent to the American engines, in small and annoying ways.

All Australian V6's where built as RWD engines and where modified in ways to cope with the harsher Australian environment. The other main problem (with the V6) is that the old Nissan RB inline 6 was (is) a supersmooth motor and the V6.....well its a heap of crap in that regard. Holden spent millions trying to make a "silk purse from a sow's ear" By the time the VY came around in 2003, they had almost suceeded. The next car along, the VZ dropped this engine totally and went to the alloytech....:?

I've heard that the Alloytech is pretty rough.

Shame Ford are going to be dropping their inline 6 soon, good engine that.

i rather quite like the look of these cars.... i love the kinda abrupt end to the roof line where you got that large door and then a tiny window followed by a almost vertical drop. me likes
