You may have been thinking General Motors has timed their muscle car revival all wrong, what with the 2010 Chevy Camaro coming out just as gas hits $51 per gallon. But see that's just what they want ? to make driving this car an indulgence. And why wouldn't it be? Especially as it now appears that although the V8-engined 2010 Camaro SS may be getting all the attention, the V6 is going to pack quite a punch as well. These new shots from the forum fan-boys looking beyond the F-body at Camaro5 give us the clearest look yet under the hood of the six-cylinder model. But this does not appear to be your grandpa's engine.

Look closely at the throttle-body size and shape and the bolts holding it on, the three fluid reservoirs in the same locations, all cues that this is indeed the glorious direct-injection V6. That means about 300 HP, the same sort of power Ford gets from the V8 Mustang GT. And look, they've even moved the battery out of the engine bay, likely mounting it in the trunk like the Pontiac G8. All in all it looks like just the thing for the indulgence-minded muscle car buyer.

Decent amount of power with the 6, should be a good little car

Well hopefully this does make it into the production version. I assume this motor is lighter than the LS* v8's, if thats the case then this motor with some lightening techniques on the chassis could make for a kick ass little sleeper.

procharge it! then lets see those power numbers rise! :p

and i like the headlights

and if the rims were black i think theyd look awesome

and i like the hood. i like the whole damn thing!

itll be even better with the LS9 tho hehe :D

I don't know why Jalopnik is going about 'indulgence'. The Camaro will be relatively cheap and I'll be surprised if it's not capable of 30mpg on the highway. And 30mpg isn't bad. My Celica only averaged about 25mpg, and the Ford (ha!) ... 17mpg. And I can't keep my $%&#ing Yamaha running ... anyway, I'd love to own something that could manage 30mpg.

Just like it first did with "official" spy shots of the production Camaro coupe, General Motors has released a pair of small shots showing the production Camaro Convertible in its current state of development. We're told on the GM FastLane Blog that the pics are a reward for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the first set of shots of the Camaro Coupe, which apparently meant a lot to the team of engineers testing the vehicle. While not much is revealed on these preproduction models that we didn't already know, the second shot shows the convertible's profile with the soft-top up, and it appears that the strong lines of the coupe have not been sacrificed by the retractable roof.

Hmmm, production headlights.

We're happy to say that GM need not bother with those fancy, expensive photo shoots for the 2010 Chevy Camaro. We have your brochure shots right here and we're even ahead of the deadline! Spied while zooming down the open road, these photos show the Camaro like never before.

These new photos are the latest since photos leaked of a production body shell on an assembly line.

As previously reported, the Camaro will make its debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September.

Also recently, spy photographers captured some of the best images of the upcoming muscle car to date ? including a sneak peek at the car's interior. The Camaro's cabin closely mirrors the concept's ? as expected ? and its fit and finish and quality of materials looks to be much better than in previous prototypes, indicating the car is ready for its September reveal.

Aside from the car's headlights and a few other finishing touches, the Camaro looks like it is ready for production.

The test car's exhaust appears to be diverging from the show car's setup and looks more inline with what we can expect from the road-going version.

A close up of the Camaro's wheel also reveals the car's tire size ? 275 40 R 20.

GM officials have yet to say exactly what engines the Camaro will be offered with. However, GM chairman Bob Lutz referred to the V8 as "big," lending possible credence to the earlier report of an all-new 6.2L V8 would be the top-end motor. GM has already confirmed a V6 model will be offered to do battle with low-end Mustangs and Challengers, but a turbocharged four-cylinder is still not out of the question. The automaker hopes to sell as many as 100,000 units annually, Lutz said last year.

Overall, the body shape looks very similar to the Camaro Concept. Apparently, GM has added a B-pillar to the Camaro's body structure for added strength. Otherwise, the car is virtually unchanged from the concept, as GM has promised.

Availability

Circle Monday, February 16, 2009 on your calendar as the date the new 2010 Camaros will start heading down the production line at the Oshawa plant in Ontario.

In actuality, this means it will more than likely be mid-March before you'll be able to put your hands on one at a dealership. That puts Camaro availability about a year behind that of its nearest rival, the Dodge Challenger.

A few GM higher ups have stated that the General will start making Camaros in late 2008. That's true, but, a little misleading. Salable, pilot build, Camaros will be the cars rolling down the line in late 2008. This run of cars will be given to engineers, execs and managers to drive for some fast feedback on any last minute changes that might need to be made to the car or the production process. This production run will not be available to the general public to buy.

For those seeking a convertible Camaro, you'll have to wait until Monday, December 7, 2009 ? a little bit late for the 2009 convertible season in northern climates. Look for them to start showing up at dealers in late December or early January depending on where you are in the United States.

It's also worth mentioning that these dates are valid as of today. If the Camaro program should hit a snag in its final testing regimens, delays of several days to a few weeks or months are always possible, but unlikely.

GM executives have publicly said Chevy expects to sell over 100,000 Camaros per year with pricing for the V6 model starting in the $20,000 range.

i actually like the production head lights. there very different without taking away from the over all look of the car. id have to say that the weakest part of the car is the rear. theres something that just isnt right. maybe it just needs the 60's style spoiler ?

and the convertible looks Fantastic! and i dont even like verts :p

Maybe its the black paint, but somehow the convertible doesn't look very nice in that picture.

Do want. I think the turbo 4 is the most interesting of them all, those tend to be very tuneable and might end up like the 1.8T/2.0T A4 vs 3.0/3.2 where most people prefer the "cheap" one because it's very easy to up the power to the same/more than the V6 for less money.

maybe it is just the black paint. but the shot of the convertible with the stop up looks great IMO. just the rear of the car looks abit scattered and small compared to the rest of the car which is beefy and aggressive.

I love it, both versions. I normally don't really like the look of convertibles, but I need both versions of this car. With LS9s.

Although the Chevrolet Camaro has offered quite a few trim and package options over the years, a fairly consistent hierarchy ? in some form or another ? was present during the car?s 35 year production run ? base six-cylinder, Z28 and SS. But a new report indicates that the 2010 Camaro will tear up this road map.

According to Road & Track, Chevrolet will launch the Camaro with three trim levels, but not the three we have already outlined. Instead, R&T says Chevy will launch the LS, LT and SS, with both base models being powered by V6s.

If the report is accurate, look for the base LS model to be powered by a 220 horsepower 3.5L V6 while the up-level LT will use a version of the Cadillac CTS? 3.6L V6, likely producing about 300 horsepower. The SS model will do with a version of the Corvette?s LS3 motor, rated at 400-405 horsepower.

If you aren?t confused yet, just hold on a minute. Road & Track also surmises that a Z28 model will join the range sometime after the convertible bows in 2010, but that it will trump the SS ? completely going against the Camaro?s history. Power for the Z28 is said to be sourced from a detuned version of the Corvette ZR1?s supercharged LS9 motor, making somewhere in the neighborhood of 480 to 500 horsepower.

While it was widely assumed that the Camaro would offer a 400 horsepower model and 500 horsepower model derived from the ZR1, it was believed that the top model would wear the SS moniker. The availability of two V6s is also a bit perplexing as it would seem to make more sense to offer just one six-cylinder engine ? especially considering the direct-injection V6 will surely return better fuel-economy than the 3.5L.

To add even more confusion to the mix, Chevrolet is still considering a four-cylinder option ? likely to replace the LS model?s V6. And with Camaro naming apparently out of whack, it?s completely possible that the four pot Camaro could wear the ZL1 nameplate.

I'm not sure I trust their info about the Z28, SS, and ZL1 but the info about the 3.5 is interesting. I didn't think that engine would make it.

If i'm wrong correct me, but wasnt the Z/28 the top package (price-wise) for the first generation?

Z28 was sort of the "road racing/handling" package, SS has always been the drag racing one with a giant motor.

For all the other gens SS was about Z/28 but i'm not sure for the first, which they are trying to re-create.

The way i would do it:

Base V6: Camaro
CTS-V V6: Camaro RS
Base V8: Z/28
LS9 Version: Super Sport

At the end of the day i suppose it doesnt matter, that is a dead sexy car and i do fucking want. Just please dont let them cancel it after 2 years like the GTO, which i have a feeling may just happen.

Yeah, that's the way I'd do it.

They should also do a very low production run of ZL1 Camaros with the full 620+hp LS9.

They should also expand on the RS nameplate and just call it a Rally Sport, since it sounds cooler and not very many people know what RS stands for.

Oh yeah, sorry ? in all that Transformers Corvette concept and Z28 hubub, we forgot to show you these camera phone shots taken by a forum fan-boy over at Camaro5 of what's purportedly yet another shot of a pre-production 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. Jeez, all these Camaros with their bow ties ? they all look alike. Wait a second ? a bow tie? This isn't a pre-production car ? it's a production car! The shooter supposedly caught it on the set of a TV show with Christian Slater. No idea what that's all about. But check out that picture below of the "SS" from the back ? are those air holes for a shunt in the rear bumper? Is that a clear brakelight in the rear window? Nice. Seriously, how much do we love the guys over at Camaro5?
