melbourne used car market [private sales]

Hi guys.
Can anyone give me ideas on the best way to locate a used car in Melbourne.
I am on transfer from NZ next month and not familiar with the australian used car market.
I am an ex mechanic so am happy to buy privately or at auction, but i prefer to avoid car dealers. [no disrespect intended]
Have been looking at private listings on ebay AU, but any advise on anywhere else to buy a used car would be appreciated, like auctions or online advertising.

It's not as big as the first one I posted, and there's a lot of overlap between listings on the sites, but it's still worth checking out

Drive's got a second hand review section that's ok for a read, it's not as painful to read as their obviously paid off new car reviews.

Dealers are getting pretty desperate so there are some bargins to be had so I wouldn't rule them out, places like carcity are pretty shitty in my opinion though.
