Plans: Plans to replace the current S-Type with a lightweight model based on the XJ's aluminium structure have been canned, so Jaguar has gone back to the drawing board.
Launch: An all-new S-Type is still a long way off. However, a substantially-revised version of the current car is scheduled for launch next autumn (2006).
Design: As the heavy disguising around the front end indicates, it will receive an extensive makeover, with new headlights, grille and bumper, plus revised bonnet to meet the stringent new pedestrian safety legislation coming into force.
Safety: The bonnet will be similar to that of the upcoming new XK, popping up in the event of an impact to minimise injury and cushioning the unfortunate pedestrian (or cyclist) against the hard, immovable engine components.
Handling: Also expect a thorough overhaul to steering, suspension and handling, as Jaguar tries to keep the S-Type competitive against the likes of the 5-Series and E-Class.
More Design: The interior will be redesigned, too, for a fresher feel with a general equipment upgrade and new trim fabrics and materials - though Jaguar may guard against trying to make it look too high-tech and cutting-edge, recognising that many buyers of larger Jaguars opt for the brand precisely for its traditional, conservative image. The more extensive restyle comes in late 2008 for 2009, anyway; the all-new S-Type is said to be more of a CLS-style four-door coupe, with striking styling derived from the RD-6 show car.
