Stephen Hawking calls for Moon and Mars colonies

I don't see it being much different from sailing across the Atlantic a couple hundred years ago.

Well, atleast you can get a breath of fresh air while sailing and you don't have to be "inside" at all times......but yes, you are right: they are both similar.
 
Although it is harder to fish from a spaceship.
 
And harder to gather the crew together for a good 'ol mutiny.

I was thinking more about the psychological issue. Obviously there are numerous technical issues as well.
 
A mars colony would be easy, I mean it even comes with canals =P
