Fighting the curse of the face-eating tumour

A Jehovah's Witness who for decades refused all surgery on his horrific facial disfigurement has been given hope by a British doctor and new medical technology.
Unwilling to accept a blood transfusion, Jose Mestre has allowed the bloody tumour that first appeared on his lip in adolescence to obliterate almost all of his face.

Now 15 inches long and weighing 12 pounds, it has blinded him in one eye and made eating a daily ordeal. As it begins to block his airways, doctors fear his life could be in danger.

But now one of Britain's leading facial surgeons has proposed treating Jose, 51, by employing ultrasound waves to coagulate the blood before the operation.

This should allow his growths to be removed without risk of heavy bleeding ? satisfying his religious prohibition on blood transfusions that has so far hampered his search for treatment.

Jose was examined by two doctors in Britain - Loshan Kangesu, consultant plastic surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, and Dr Iain Hutchison of St Bartholomew's in London.

Dr Hutchison, who also runs the Saving Faces surgery research charity, is optimistic that a single operation with a harmonic scalpel could have a dramatic affect on Jose's features.

Jose's condition, haemangioma, stems from abnormalities in the capillaries and veins in his face. In effect, what should be a river carrying blood back to his heart has turned into a lake, which has now expanded to obliterate the rest of his features.

**WARNING**

Pic is quite disturbing....but then again, most people here have probably seen worse.

Yeah, I'm sure "God" wanted you to die a slow and painful death while being mocked all your life, buddy. Surely a test of your faith and not you just being a moron.

Yeah....I'm watching this on TLC right now, and his sister, who has taken care of him while in London meeting with the specialists, just got really pissed at him because he's stilling resisting blood transfusions.

You'll piss/shit all the transfused blood anyway soon enough. It's not like receiving a liver transplant or something.

Time to confess! Who of you thought 'Stig?' when reading the thread title? I sure did.

Seriously, what religion would condone that. (letting someone suffer like that when they can get help.)

As Viper said, a test of faith. Building strong character and a resolve to make one a better person.

How he's supposed to do that when not being able to eat food i don't know.

It's not like those guys in the Philippines that volutarily crusify themselves at Easter but the principle is the same.

You read my post wrong and their blood transfusion ban has nothing to do with a test of faith. ;)

I meant the disability, not the blood transfusion :?

I saw adverts for a show about him on Discovery earlier in the year. I don't think he should be getting as much media attention/sympathy, because it was his choice to leave it there and not do anything about it, like a fungal nail infection that goes bad.

See, that is why I fully believe that God gave us free will, God's greatest gift to us. God shows this man that there are people willing and able to help him, but yet he refuses.

It is like the story of the man, who sees that flood waters are getting higher and higher, he refuses help from his fellow man, choosing instead to pray and hope that God will lower the flood. Finally the man drowns, and at the gates of heaven, the man is wondering why God didn't answer his prayers. God responds that he did by sending people to his rescue, it was his choice to drown, thus free will.

I do not mind when it is ones own life -it is so utterly wrong to decide for their children that it is OK for them to die, the children can not make an informed choice and override their parents. This is one situation where I would agree with state intervention.

That is not a disability, and it could have been easily fixed.

Technically deafness is a disability but in a lot of cases can be fixed by an implant, it's a fine line in definition but i get your point. Especially is this case is also born from "abnormalities."

It did, however, become more a disability the longer he left it and the harder it came to fix. Initially of course it would be far easier to fix than now.

That's...unfortunate that his faith kept him from getting proper treatment.
It's #$@%ing stupid. Jehovahs Witness, Christian Scientists and the like really piss me off. If you believe God created us, why refuse the medical advances that our God-given intellect has provided. Sorry, I've had more than one debate with some of these guys and this point drives me nuts.

Its like those fucking retarded parents a year or so ago, who decided to pray that their child got well while she died in their house instead of taking her to the doctor.

I'm glad your invisible friend came through for you.

Fucked up part is they were strangely fine with the whole ordeal, marking it up to "God's will".

Religion is a fucking plague.
