Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

Well considering the big difference is the front end, and it comes off at the same place as the real one, and the fact that it has two fewer doors, I'm wiling to bet someone could make one and swap it out to look like that.

EDIT: Beaten by fatmouse. Still, how hard can it be?

Project Charger Makeover... If I'm still into cars when I get a house (in 10-odd years, perhaps), I'll invite you over to work on it.

pfffft I have garage. Clean it out and find me a charger and I'll do it now :p
How hard can it be? While I'm at it I can try and make a ripoff Caractere grill for peggy, frankly the stock one is to flimsy.

In a junkyard recently I completely stumbled upon the Miami Dade Crown Victoria and Explorer police cars from Casino Royale (the scene was filmed in England). Thought that was quite an interesting find.

 When I was car-shopping I was choosing between a Charger and the Jag. And there's no way the Jag's getting any cosmetic modding. Oh well.

Go buy charger too. More cars better than less cars.

My mother wants to get a New Beetle.

KILL ME NOW!

Because it's a Beetle or because it's a Golf IV?

Well, the thing is, the reason why in the other thread my thoughts jumped from used 190e's to brand new imprezas, is that we're thinking about getting rid of the golf with the scrappage bonus, cause I don't really need a car now that I moved to the city, and 2500? scrappage bonus is probably the best value we're ever gonna get for it :D

So that would mean new car of my mother's choice, which I can drive whenever I'm back with my parents. My dad wants her to get a japanese econobox, so it doesn't break, but she's pretty into the beetle. I guess the good thing about the beetle would be I could always say to my friends "sorry, I can't drive, I don't have a car. Someone else is gonna have to be designated driver"

Random Mk4 thoughts (the silver 1998 1.6 Comfortline automatic, 83 500 km) from a week's use:

- Fuel consumption is on the biggish side, 8l/100km for a 130km trip on motorway/highway, usually ~10l/100km town
- Handling is "uninterested", trying to chuck it into corners doesn't really result in anything
- The autobox is clueless and erratic, and it's always surprised when I want to overtake on a highway
- While the sound insulation is rather good, the engine sounds like it's working hard and usually has a crisis when I want to overtake on a highway
- the Blaupunkt stereo is still hopeless, and emits the sole squeak in the cabin
- Needs new tires, needs alignment, needs a brake overhaul.. I'd like to see some reasonable-looking 15" alloys under it.

And I still rate it higher than a friend's 1999 Focus 1.6 I drove on Saturday. The Golf feels like it's a class above, in general unspecified solidity. The Focus has been beaten a lot, though, so it's probably more worn than the average 150 000 km example. And, while you can't really get a Mk4 to rust, you can't stop a Mk1 Focus from rusting.

Every time someone says they are buying a 90's beetle with auto transmission on the beetle site everyone tells them find another or do a transmission swap because it is THAT bad. Thankfully they swapped them out for the tiptronic one a few years later.

My girl has a New Beetle with that crappy slushbox. It is truly abysmal.

The replacement they put in is better but still rage inducing. I wish I had the money to swap the transmission :(

I'd love a cheap manual Mk4 TDI, though. It would be a good year-round beater, with some suspension work done.
