It was my dads, he had planned to restore her, but he didn't have the time. And once he realized he couldn't sell it for anything more than a shoelace, he decided I could have it, now it sits out the back, longing to be taken for a drive. It has alot of problems, the exterior is rusting, and the interior is fading, but I love it, and I can't see myself ever selling it. Hopefully once I get a real job and some real money, I will be able to sort her out and finish my dad?s dream of restoring her to her former beauty.

I like those old Jags. They look good. Paint it black and smoke the headlights and taillights and it'll look down-right sinister.

Always wanted one of those, dirt cheap to much of a risk buying one. Never was to keen on the interior but the exterior :love:

That's the plan, well sort of, I've already replaced the rear lights since those photos were taken, but I just got the red ones instead of the smoke ones, for some reason they were cheaper:?. And on the top of the list is a re-spray, as it is desperately in need of one, There's a few bumps and a bit of rust that needs to be cut out first though :), And I've got a leaper to stick on her.

How does that U-shaped autobox work?

I thought it was J-shaped for Jaguar.

How is the car mechanically? Engine bay looks pretty good.

Mechanically she is wonderful, I mean she is in need for a service, and she has the odd cough on a cold morning, but once she is warmed up she is a real beauty to drive :), Although the alternator went on it a couple of months ago, and ever since then the battery has been a bit stuffed, so you have to keep it at high revs for about a min when you start it up, to charge up to battery. I'm pretty sure it just needs a new battery, that one is a few years old now anyway. The main thing that brings her down is the electronics, she has over 3 kilometers of wiring in her, and I wouldn't be suprised if half that wasn't working :p.

I love those old tanks, and yours doesn't look like a pup at all. It also has easily the best exterior and interior colour choices. Perfect car for a big lazy cruise!

None too shabby. If you don't mind my asking, where is the rust cropping up? I'm looking at getting a Series III Jag toward the end of the year. I can beat parts failure, I can fix broken electrical systems, but rust is my nemesis...

Rust appears in different places in the XJ40 as opposed to the Series III.

I haven't forgotten you, CM. :) Just been busy... earning money to feed to the Jaguar. :)

That's correct, as for my Jag, rust has appeared in the boot, window seals, door, around the back window, and just about anywhere you can imagine, including the drivers side power window motor, which I just spent today rebuilding as the window had stoped working.

That being said, my dad's mate stayed with us for a couple of days last week, and he has and '87 XJ40, it is rust free, and always has been.

My advice is to search around for a rust free example, I would've, but mine was a hand-me-down. :)

Ah, that doesn't sound too good, still it's in decent condition for it's type, most of them you can't accelerate in, because the dashboard would just come off and hit you in the face.

^^

My dad's old XJ40 had a tiny bit of rust on the sunroof, and that was it.

I drove it up to Canberra last weekend, bout a six hour drive, she made it all the with out a single cough up, I left it up there though, I'm getting the guy who used to service for dad to give it a full service as well as replacing the fuel pump, as it isn't idling quite right, and often cuts out, I'm pretty sure the older fuel pumps were the cause of this, so that should fix it. I also got a new battery so now that problem is no more. :), thankfully dad is paying for all this, otherwise my bank account would be dwindling, unfortunatly milking cows just doesn't cut it, I really need a new job, but he says as long as it's anything for the car, he'll pay for it, I have a feeling he'll want it back once it's all fixed. :p

Idling/cutting out issues on the AJ6 engine is quite often the crank angle/position sensor going south. It may or may not throw a code when it does so, but the age of the car indicates you should probably just go ahead and replace it.

I definately dig those older XJ's. The V12 models have a particularly nice noise when the throttle is *cough* ahem pushed.
