I had a weird De Ja Vu moment during the news, when they were talking about that car with the "surfboard hatch".

Overall good episode. 9/10

Haha yeh they talked about it at MPH this year :)

Think how gutted you would be if you bought a Buggatti Veyron for your leasing company, and someone put (what looks like) a basterd of a dent in it. Looks difficult to get out, not that im a car bodywork specialist!

Yeh 8/10

I only gave it an 8. I think the story arc this year is James not being slow anymore. I think the challenge was interesting, but it did get boring ? I was amazed the Jag made it though ? especially when he said it was going to be extremely short and ended up having more than enough fuel left.

Koenigsegg still beat Veyron and Zonda.

I am a very happy girl right now. :D

take note, Bugatti weighs half a ton more than those two.. well im probly not making any sense but if the veyron was stripped out, it would've probably beat those two...

think what JC and a lot of people out there don't understand is that the Veyron isn't supposed to be a mind bending, track trashing, hyper car. It's supposed to be a good looking hyper car that's ludicrously powerful and can reach 400 KPH. Buggati themselves have said that the project was made just to re-lauch the brand.

Well, I think JC just assumed the machine would beat anything in every circumstances. But it seems it is a great extreme cruiser - vide TG's race with Jeremy in the Veyron through Europe. Still I'd rather have another car from those races - a nice Aston or a Jag if I remember correctly. Veyron is incredible, but has no style.

A very interesting challenge! the compromise of saving fuel vs going fast. Too bad Jaguar's fuel gauge is too conservative ( as mine was when i first got it) or JC would have dominated the other two cars. Regardless the Jaguar was still the best choice.

As many have said the Veyron is more of a GT car, not an all out sports car, it still dominates pretty much anything in a drag race. I think the Veyron is in a class of its own, above any other car made. SUPERB

Pitdog: the cars featured in races across europe are DB9, 612, SLR and yes the veyron :)

This TG gets a 9/10 overall! Make episode 5 a perfect 10 please!

The thing I love about the Veyron is that exists. A bunch of people were given this impossible task and they pulled it off, not just by inches but by miles. They made a 1001bhp 240+mph supercar that doesn't try to kill you for looking at it.

I was disappointed it was slower around the track than some of the others, but I figure that it wasn't really the point. The CCX, Zonda et al are about flash and bling and "WOOOOARGH!" and that's cool. But the Veyron is a bit smoother, a bit more refined and, to paraphrase, will ask you politely before it tears your face off.

A Veyron versus any other car is like Concorde versus other planes. Other planes are bigger, more refined, more luxurious. But given a choice... you'd fly on the Concorde. Not because it is the best, but because it represents the ultimate. There will be a faster Zonda or CCX - but there won't be a faster Veyron.

Agreed... and it's a damn sight better looking than the Gumpert...

All you guys say "they id not puss the Veyron, it didn even kick the tail out"
Maybe they didn puss it that hard. But remember in fifth gear when nedel drives the Veyron on a track, no matter what he does he can't even make slide just a little bit when the traction control is on.

I enjoyed the show this week. I felt there was a better balance to proceeding than we've seen recently.

I know Jezza did something similar with the fuel race before in an Audi A8 to Scotland-land and back but I think there was something different and it worked very well. The balance of speed vs fuel economy was interesting. Let's hope "normal service will be resumed next time" when they get back to using up lots of petrol in cars going sideways.

I wasn't that surprised by the rather tubby looking Veyron not being "fastest" on the track, but no surprises about the Zonda F. I think the Veyron just has too many luxuries to be as fast as some of the competition on the TG track. The Zonda did look fast, even when it wasn't moving ;)

Looking forward to next week already :)

Exactly - JC did an economy run in the Audi; however this was an economy race... quite a different beast IMHO.

why didn't anyone just draft behind the trucks? in the US we have a show called mythbusters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(season_5)#Drafting_For_Money
that showed the benefits of drafting. With all the trucks in the states going 70+ mph you'd save a good amount, especially uphill. I would've drafted then stepped on it...
i mean 20% is a good 120 more miles easily with those vehicles
I tried it a few weeks ago and I could actually coast for a while. Current fuel consumption showed 0.9 l/100km. :)

About the show: BRILLIANT! And I thought the Veyron didn't go balls out as the Zonda did. It is a bit like the new RS6. Insanely powerful, but too heavy than the competition, so slower around a bendy track like this. Still the better car, though.

All I want to know is what is the specific model of the Jag Jezza used? I'm recommending it to a friend who's apparently all about the whole fuel economy shindig...great ep though, Jezza complaining about his Jag taking him further from home....hilarious.

Jaguar XJ6

Not sure if anyone noticed, but had the veyron been tested back in 12/05, it would have been the fasted on the power board, beating the Zonda F that ran a week prior. So at one point it was the fast car in the world along with being the fastest on the top gear track. Food for though. I agree, the veyron did better than i thought it would, for it's weight, did very well.

I LOVED James Mays power-test. My biggest beef with the episode as a whole was that i don't really remember any of them talking about the cars they were driving in the "Race" at all. MPG is kind of boring to me though, so pfft.

<3 Zonda :D

i'm sorry guys, but could you please be so kind and watch this and tell me the stig was giving it the full beens from the start ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Mmgn8PnULc&feature=related

furthermore the esp was on, watch this idiot putting the pedal to the metal and what happend...
watch the power lap and the smoking tire at the very last corner (esp trying to hold in the power from that massive 16:4)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaEe__CmCZY

i know its a heavy car, but bear with me it - stig drove some very difficult cars e.g. the koenigsegg without the TP-wing(althoug he crashed the ccx ^^) . he should be able to handle the veyron without TC/ESP aswell
i know it is a very, very good time, but..... i cannot believe it came 5th...

i love the veyron it's just a masterpiece, a yardstick of carengineering

i enjoyed the show just as much... 9/10 GO JAMES GO ! ;D

Does understeer this lorry ^^ (12x01)

Power isn't everything. The Zonda F roadster has a better power to weight ratio; and not only that, but looking at just the weight, it is 1700 lbs lighter. That makes a huge difference when you're going around corners! That's the weight of a small car the Veyron is having to lug around compared to the Zonda.
