Summary: BMW brought over several 750i xDrive units to Detroit to shuttle execs around at the auto show. One was stolen.

Tired of their usual fare of Cadillac Escalades, Detroit's car thieves raised their sights Wednesday night by stealing a BMW 7-Series that the automaker had hauled in for the show.

The 7-Series, valued at somewhere between $90,000 and $140,000, was one of 19 cars BMW brought to the show to haul executives around town. (And yes, every automaker does this; there would be nothing so shameful as to arrive at an auto show in some other maker's car, even when your top-end company ride is a Volkswagen Routan.) The jackers swiped the sedan as it was being loaded on a hauler across the street from a downtown hotel.

The BMW comes with a tracing system standard, which should give police some clues. Also on the side of the law: The sheer impossibility of taking any part off a BMW 7-Series without at least two hours of labor.

The car has been found... and the tracking system was disabled. Probably in much less than two hours.

The $90,000 BMW 750i xDrive stolen from the German automaker during the Detroit Auto Show was found today mostly intact ? except for the cut wires where the thieves had disabled BMW's tracking system.

The car, brought into town to ferry BMW execs from one champagne-fueled party to the next, was stolen by carjackers outside the Westin Book Cadillac hotel in downtown Detroit. The car was being loaded onto a car carrier when, according to witnesses, the driver of the truck and others were distracted, allowing the thief to make off with the high-priced BMW.

The car was found located near an apartment complex on Telegraph Road in western Detroit. Police say they will examine the vehicle for evidence that could lead them to the carjackers, such as hearty peals of laughter at their chances of being caught.

Apparently it's easy to steal the car and disconnect the tracking system. If only repairing it when the iDrive or other components inevitably failed were that easy.
