DETROIT, Jan 07, 2007 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX News Network) --

Ford Motor Co. teamed with the maker of Airstream travel trailers to create a concept touring vehicle inspired by spacecraft and by the aerodynamic trailers that became icons of the American road.

The automaker calls the Ford Airstream Concept a futuristic crossover, with its silver color, capsule-shaped exterior, orange-rimmed windows and 12 symbolic rivets that pay homage to Airstream's riveted aluminum construction.

"It's the ultimate modern touring vehicle that delivers flexibility and capability with dynamic design that evokes the spirit of the journey," Peter Horbury, Ford's executive director of design for The Americas, said in a statement.

The concept vehicle, to be unveiled Sunday at the North American International Auto Show, operates under electric power at all times, powered by a plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel cell.

The passenger side features a powered clamshell door that runs two-thirds the length of the vehicle, and there is a three-door hatch at the rear.

Inside, the focal point of the rear seating area is a screen for entertainment and games that also provides ambient mood settings, including a virtual fire.

"We want to continue finding options for tomorrow's road trips," said Bob Wheeler, president and chief executive of Airstream, based in Jackson Center, Ohio. "Our success ... has come from challenging the conventional thinking about what an Airstream is."

Translation after seeing this vehicle: we're getting desperate.

Even in the future Fords have dumb looking grilles!

Mmmm shiny. The overall design (interior & window shape aside) doesn't offer anything remotely new - I mean the S-Max looks more up-to-date than this. I know it looks like that because of the Airstream connection, but still...

Needs a bong.

Oh good, very feasible.

 HAHAHAHA Thats the deal with them side windows? R3eminds me of the Oscar Wiener Truck!

Meh I like it because its shiny, I could stare at it for ages and with the rear opened, it looks like an alien factory inside. Why can't other cars have this same effect on me? :p

it doesnt look very aerodynamic. despite its name "hey lets make a car that as aerodynamic as a card board box and call it the 'airstream!' "

what's with the windows buttons... oh wait, are they for storing stuff?

Never know when you might need to shoot an impromptu porn movie along the side of the road with a bus full of stranded cheerleaders.

Well, I guaran-damn-tee you that if I came across a bus full of stranded cheerleaders who were ... umm, grateful for my assistance, I would want to document the event too - at least to prove to myself that it actually happened and I didn't dream it. I should be so lucky to have dreams that good.

Wierd. The interior looks porno appropriate.

Another boring note: make that bottom tab longer and it would be great for someone in a wheelchair.

If you hit them all together, does your car reboot?

I kept a full tool box in the back storage are of my jeep just for such an occurance.

I never had the chance to use it on a cheerleader's bus though. Did use it on my jeep a fair amount of times. :(
