Schumacher takes taxi wheel
December 12, 2007 - 8:47AM

Seven-time formula one world champion Michael Schumacher shocked a cab driver by taking over the wheel in order to be on time for a flight.

Schumacher flew into the aerodrome at the Bavarian town of Coburg on Saturday and took a taxi to the village of Gehuelz, 30km away, to pick up a new puppy - an Australian Shepherd dog called "Ed".

But when the 38-year-old, plus his wife and two children, caught a taxi back to the airport they were short on time and, after a polite request, cab driver Tuncer Yilmaz watched in wonder as Schumacher took the wheel.

"I found myself in the passenger seat, which was strange enough, but to have "Schumi" behind the wheel of my cab was incredible," Mr Yilmaz told the Muenchner Abendzeitung.

"He drove at full throttle around the corners and overtook in some unbelievable places."

Mr Yilmaz was well rewarded for the unusual journey - on top of the 60 euro ($A100) fare, he was also given a 100 euro ($167) tip.

Schumacher's spokesperson Sabine Kehm later confirmed the story.

The German track ace, who now lives in Switzerland, retired from formula one in 2006 after a glittering career and, despite test drives for his old team Ferrari, has insisted there is no chance of a return to racing.

And he insists he wants a quiet retirement... he can't help himself :p

Wonder what the German Police will think of this now its documented :D

That is just brilliant!!!! Although so much for MR. FIA Road Safety Campaigner!!!

Awesome. And certainly a change from the taxi drivers in Sydney, most of whom think they're Michael Schumacher...

Hamilton would be faster since he would have taken an illegal shortcut :p

Riding in a vehicle with Schumi is seriously one of the coolest things I can think of to do. Mr. Schumacher, you can drive my car anytime. :)

 Schumacher thinking of a new career in driving taxis?

but seriously that is a very cool story :)

Made even more awesome by the fact that he's purchased an Australian dog called "Ed".

That's great...you've got to love the guy...

:lmao: That's just brilliant!

Schumacher you legend. Always the gentleman, asking the cab driver politely, if he could drive them back to the airport. Schuey, retired? Yeah right!

 Schumacher thinking of a new career in driving taxis?

He'd be the seven-time world champion taxi driver as well!

It made the main page of news.com.au :D

^ Hahahha, you got to love it. I'd like to see him take a spin on the top gear track!

What an idiot. He of course is driving god and absolutely nothing can harm him (or his family riding with him). Hope he gets them punishments he deserves.
Pretty stupid of him (well, what a surprise) to admit it later through his spokeswoman. The police just used a YouTube video as evidence against some kids who were so clever not to hide the numberplates.

It was on the autobahn. No speed limits, so he has nothing to worry about.

"He drove at full throttle around the corners and overtook in some unbelievable places."

Thats likely to attract some attention from the police and the FIA.
