Volkwagen Golf VI unveiled a bit early

The Golf V (like the ones before it) is a good car, that sells well ... why change the recipe?

I quite like that VW don?t run after every trend, jump every bandwagon ... the only thing about the VI is that I would work on that interior design a bit too, would be nice if the Golf VI also looked like a new Golf on the inside, not almost completley like the old one.

well realistically speaking there is nothing inherently wrong with the current VW interior. It could always be refined though and it looks like it has been tweaked a bit. It's very hard to tell though from this one interior shot.

There'd be nothing wrong with the Golf's interior, if it were the year 2000. Nowadays every car in the segment has better or equal interior design, and the Golf is more expensive than most.

You are right, that one shot doesn?t say much.

Design, yes. Quality ... no way. In it?s class, the current Golfs interiour Quality is only rivaled by it?s (more expensive) sister, the A3, not even by the Mercedes A-Class or the BMW 1 Series. If you step from a Astra, a Civic or a C4 into a Golf, you know exactly why it is more expensive. But don?t get me wrong ... I?d like some new design in there as well ... as well as it is made ... it is getting boring. I hope they don?t do the same mistake Ford did in the 90ies with the Escort and Fiesta by just going "the old interior was good enough, let?s put it into the new cars". It went wrong badly for Ford and especially the Escort ...

the front looks great. Just like a scirocco.
but i reckon the back is going to date dramatically. It's too squared and in a couple of years, it'll start looking old

I'm sure they've planned a facelift for that back (which I like) in a few years anyway ;)

Reviewers of the Scirocco too complains about the interior, which is straight out of a Eos. A cars interior is part of it's identity, and too much sharing destroys that identity.

For a car like the Golf, I think that's an unreasonable complaint. This is a "use and loose it" type of car. It just happens that VW did an excellent job making it a very good car as well. I like German cars that are professional looking. That's my main complaint with BMW's latest designs. Being different, just for the sake of being different, is not a good thing. I'd rather VW focus on building a great automobile, rather then splitting that focus on trying to make it different.

I really don't mind the back. It looks very Germanic, which is something other German car manufacturers are loosing sight of. But the front I think looks too anonymous with those big headlamps. The last generation had more of an identity.

And I agree with efoolution - I would like some more design go into the interior. This one just looks too plain for liking, much like the old one. It is upmarket though, which is nice.

well the mini cooper has a 'more designed' interior, and it's awful... I'd rather they stick with good and more sedate than flashy but terrible.

I actually kinda like the back, simple and stylish.
not personally a fan of a grill that goes from headlight to headlight right cross the front.. but the GTi should be smashing

The only way I'd ever consider the Golf (or Rabbit here) is if they ever fit any other engine besides the awful 2.5L 5 cylinder engine.

They completely changed both the Fiesta (89-02) and Escort (90-01) interiors partway through their lives - 1995 in both cases I think, when the cars had major facelifts. And apart from the Puma, no model had the same interior as another car, unlike the Vauxhall Corsa and Tigra which was exactly the same interior for both.

Well it seems now it's time for the new GTI & GTI-R.
Wait! GTI-what??

Within days of the new VW Golf VI media release, talk about the sporty GTI version is already emanating. According to VW insiders who spoke with Autocar, the Golf GTI will get 11hp more for a total of 211hp. Increase in power is a result of VW's new global 2.0-liter turbo EA888 engine, which is equipped with Audi's new variable valve-lift system. VW also made access to the turbo and oil cooler easier, therefore, keeping service times/costs down.

The GTI will also look the part with more distinctive body kit, taillights, 18 and 19-inch wheels and headlights with Audi-style LED daytime driving lights.

Unfortunately, the R32 and its sonic V6 engine are being dropped due to EU emissions legislation. However, VW will, in spirit, bring it back via an all-wheel-drive R variant called GTI-R. It will be powered by the 265hp 2.0 TFSI found in the Audi S3.

The new GTI is expected to tease enthusiasts in concept form this October in Paris. Market launch will be spring 2009.

So they are dropping the R32. Well I'm not going to cry over it as I never understood the existence of the R32.
And about the GTI...

It looks cute, yet aggressive. Like an attack bunny.

The secret of the Golf design was always that it appealed to the majority of people who simply don't want to draw attention to themselves all the time by driving an extravaganza. The Golf is the synonym for the average and that - together with its unquestionable high quality and technical maturity - is why it sells like sliced bread and will keep on doing so in the future.

Volkswagen is in an upwind at the moment. They are Europe's undisputed no. 1 car maker, can present better numbers to the public than all their competitors and are extremely strong in the markets of the newly industrializing countries, especially the Far East and South America. They are already selling more cars in China, than in Germany, and are now targetting the Indian market.

They are also planning to build a factory in the United States, that will start production in 2010 to finally get a solid footing on the U.S. market. How is that possible when everyone else is moaning under the signs of a depression?

Well, VW simply did their homework a couple of years earlier than their competitors, thus being able to announce record profits now, while almost everyone else is struggling. So in economical troubled times like these, the anti-cyclical investment behaviour might just be the right strategy to win the future, say experts, and will help VW to achieve their declared long-term goal of overtaking Toyota as the world's no. 1 car maker by the year 2018.

Why the hell does it need to be bigger?!?

Why the hell does it need to be bigger?!?

Marketing driven development. That's the only reason I can think of, they used to grow bigger because they had to be safer, and since the car had to grow anyway, they wanted it to also grow on the inside a bit. But the Golf V is quite safe and spacious.

Therefore, the only reason for a bigger Golf is so that marketing can tell people it's 'bigger and better', 'grown up as a car', etc.

Also the Polo, the next smaller VW, has almost reached the dimensions of a Golf III, so...
