So, last year, our buddy Humphrey crashed his Mk 1 Escort Rallyecar. It was put into storage and due to a dire financial situation and ridiculously expensive parts, not much happened.

So we decinded to take action when seeing a complete Mk1 for less money than the spares would cost. The "good" parts will go to the rallye car and we'll take the bent metal from the rally car, hammer it back in shape and make the Mk1 our project.

So, here's how it looks:

All the parts are in a huge box or two, so we got some work ahead of us... we also still need a donor engine and a new front axle (it currently sits on a Mk2 RS2000 front axle that's mounted with one bolt).

Proof pic will follow as soon as a gearbox was acquired.

Epic. Can't wait to see the progress. What engine will it have?

It'll get the same 1.3 it had from factory as upgrading to the larger engines is more trouble and cost than we are willing to go through...

I love old Escorts, this is going to be good. :D

i had no idea those came out as wagons as well!

The whole project only makes sense when looked at from historic rallying: We are hacking up the front end of a super-rare, straight, rust-free Mk1 Escort wagon to fix an much-more-common, bent, cobbled together rally car.

The only reason to do so is because you can't rally the wagon as that body shape was never used in rallying back in the day and it thus is not eligible to compete. Then, the wagon was actually cheaper than a used fender, windscreen and hood combined. So, just from the perspective of "getting back to racing with little money" we already have won, even if it means making the wagon worse.

As we will - it'll feature fender and hood from a crashed rallyecar, brought back into shape with hammers and lots of filler. It'll probably get sprayed in a ghastly color (construction equipment orange or yellow, maybe) as well.

But the result is not the point, as long as it'll run reliable and get T?V and H someday. The point is to wrench, BBQ and talk shit.

Approved, especially the wrenching, BBQ and shit-talk! You have a very good venue for that. And I hope the bent Escort will be mended!

Why not turn it into an awesome custom job. V8, really cool paint job, leather interior... Give it some Gas Monkey style attitude.

This would be about ?10k in the U.K.

This is continental Europe's revenge! Some cars where we'd have to pay 10k ? are worth ?250 where you live.

Make up a preposterous deadline and throw spanners

Tosh. It's a Mk1, yes, but it's a long roof, 1300 boggo with no trim or even paint...

?1700 realistic as it sits in the UK. ?2000 with a V5c.

News. It's not a Mk1 at all! It's a 75 Mk2 wagon with a Mk1 front welded on. So depending on how you look it it's a worthless piece of junk cobbled together in a shed or a highly expensive one-of-a-kind car!

Surely this means you have even more liberty regarding modifications of your own?

We want to make the rear side windows pop up so you can use them as a bar and put your beer on them.
