Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

Yeah, the guy selling it has ? signs in his eyes over the car and is very eager to make money on parting it out. However, if the trans fix turns out to be worth it, and the minor other issues it has can be fixed easily, it could be a 2000 euro car when sold on. At the very least, I could recoup some costs.

I'm going to check out the 324d this evening just to make sure I don't want it. :p

Either way, there is money to be had in that LeBaron. Seriously, if you have a place to store it, you can't go wrong. Even if the body is rusted to hell, and the engine blows up after you buy it (unlikely..) you'd still make a profit. And from reading the ad, I'd guess he is just eager to get rid of the car. It was only bought for transportation, and he lowered the already low price.. Just walk in, hand him 400? cash, and drive it away.

This is what I'm thinking. I do have a spot for the car, and I have an option for a garage I can have goes at fixing the body (at this price, it can't get worse by me fixing it).

And hm, don't we have a LeBaron buff here, called Polygon?

Called the tranny shop. Fixing the Chrysler is 1000 euro at least; having the transmission replaced is up to 2400 euro. Not sounding too good.

That was obvious, it's a fwd car, so to swap the transmission you need to take the engine out, which takes a lot of time.. It could just need new oil, it could need a new transmission control unit, or it could need a major overhaul. I still think it's an ok deal. Atleast go and test drive it?

That would be because we haven't gotten the Fiesta in over 20 years.

On the other hand, here's something you could get locally for about that $4k USD you originally mentioned:

On a somewhat related note, here's a couple of random X300s that are quite happily proving that the design is quite capable of making 'The Long Run':

/me thinks "let me guess, a Jag."

Yup. A Jag.

You are nothing if not predictable.

Seen it coming from a mile away.

says who?

i've replaced the tranny on a corrado, a golf III and a '91 honda civic, and haven't taken out the engine out on either of them (well, not for that occasion at least)
(you do need to release the engine mounts, but grab a giraffe and have the engine hoover in place, no need to disconnect any wires/hoses)

The transmission guy suggested clutch packs, which at the cheapest option is still a four-digit repair. The earliest the car is checkable is next week, so I'm doing some number-crunching until that.

Agreed. Replaced my transmission in my 94 Integra last November and I didn't need to take the engine out. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't a pain in the ass (which it was). Chances are it's the same for the Lebaron.

I need to remove the engine to replace my gearbox in my RWD MG.

Heh I like the concept of making money off a K-Car. Over here they aren't worth much at all. Partly due to the fact they don't have the decency of dying.

They're not exactly worth their weight in gold here, either, so I'm cautious of dropping 2k on an ailing Baron.

Audi audio concept uses 62 speakers for supreme sound

Right now, if you happen to find yourself in a honkin' German SUV and you want a great sound system, you're in luck. Audi will be happy to supply you with a Q7 that boasts a Bang & Olufsen sound system with a dizzying 14 speakers, but that's child's play compared to what the Four-Rings are up to with the Institute for Digital Media Technology. The two have partnered to create a special Q7 prototype with 62 speakers, including five woofers and five tweeters. This isn't some Pimp My Ride exercise, though. Each one of those speakers is individually driven by an advanced computer to create a universal audio sweet spot in the cabin.

IDMT calls the technology wave field synthesis, and the system can individually delay speaker impulses to keep the sound in check. It's less of a cacophony and more of personalized stereo experience no matter where the listener is sitting inside the vehicle.

The wave field tech has been applied to the Linden Lichtspiele Cinema with an epic 192-speaker system. The only downside is that neither movie companies nor the recording industry are creating material with wave field encoding.

WHY?!

For your torrented mp3s to sound JUST RIGHT

this! you can't have enough

only stupid thing is, that your best sound system...is your car...

This is true for most people, actually. At least in the US, factory audio systems in cars are at a minimum mediocre. Most people either have no dedicated sound system at home and use either the TV's built in speakers, or a lousy-at-best Home-Theater-In-A-Box system. Most people's computer sound system is either built into the laptop or monitor, or merely bad. Cars, somehow, still manage to ship with serviceable speakers, amps and receivers.

This is because people's primary music listening device is their car (or their iPod's shitty earbuds).

Finally got pics of the CX with the wrong engine under the hood; the dealer had thought he had managed to send me the photos but they had never arrived in my mailbox.

They have now dropped the car's price by 300 euro. They're grown tired of it, and they're getting rid of it "one way or the other" by next week. This means that with the right offer, one can drive away in a reasonably tidy CX; but this weekend I've promised to go meet my GF:s parents in the other side of the country. Excellent
So, the car might or might not be scrap metal by Monday, I'll call then and find out how it is doing. It runs and drives well, and has MOT till Feb. It's got some rust holes, but hey - it's exactly the kind of CX I've always wanted, except for the 2300 engine of course.
