EVEN MORE Car Importation Madness?:

But wait, these things are available in America, and mad cheap too! Why go through the effort to get one from Germany? Well, 3 reasons mainly: 1. The American version is down by 30hp, thanks to draconian emissions crap. 2. The American version has those hideous 80s bumpers on it. 3. It's just plain freakin' cool to get one from das Vaterland, where it was born in the first place, and lots of people did this in the early 90s once they were aware of the horsepower deficit. And 4. the buttons are in German, which is a neat touch. I won't be able to read them and that's the fun part!

I figure that by 2012 this car will fit into the "25 years or older" NHTSA regulations, and I'll be able to nab one of these from Deutschland. I'll be 24 then, hopefully with a steady income and not living on Ramen and Campbell's Chunky soup, and with a friend that speaks German so we can go raid the autobahn on our way to a Rammstein concert where we'll mack on scary German chicks will getting sloshed on Jager bombs.

Then again, if the world ends then who will I be kiddin'.

i thought about having a mass-produced tubular steel/chromoly frame, but i thought given it's dual-purpose, that more traditional manufacturing processes would suit it fine and make it more feasible.

I was thinking more along the lines of a custom spaceframe. Easier than building your own monocoque (you only need a welder and some bits of wood as well as the metal tubing), and if you were to get the help of an engineer to help design it, potentially stronger and lighter too.

What about a 4x4 Pinny chassis with a rigid body bolted on top?

Those 2 can be easily remedied. The money and effort to import one would be better spent finding a good clean US example, changing the bumpers, and having the engine rebuilt and tweaked by a good BMW shop. They'll get you more than the factory power, and it'll likely run better.

Nice choice though.

At least you can watch the earths polarity flip around (or whatever the hell's supposed to happen) while being swathed in the comfort of German leather ;).

That's not a dream build, that's just a dream car, which this thread is not about.

The interior from a Lotus Europa:

Lastly I'd change out cover on the back (the part of the body work that makes it a paint to see out that back, but also makes the car an Exige) and replace it with a Lexan/Plexiglass piece for better rear visibility, a bit like the early Lotus Esprit's:

What's the difference between the interior of a Europa vs. an Exige? Some leather seats and a radio? Not much of a stretch of the imagination to pull that off, thankfully. ;)

if that engine's V was made flat a la' H8, that would be a nearly ideal candidate for my dream build :)

And some insulation and carpet. Not much of a stretch, but I want to keep the Lotus-ness of it. I just looked again at the Exige interior and thought it was more stripped than it really is. Anyhow, this is coming from the guy who wants the German M6 just to get the German buttons on the interior :p

Get 2 cylinder heads, and find an engineer that will build you a block block around 'em! That'll be a nice chunk of change. :) I love the idea of a flat engine, but I'd be to tempted to try and shorten the wheel base and put it under the floor, and I hate hiding engines.

Restore it to the original specs.

I fell in love with the car after I came to enjoy this rFactor mod.

If you're looking for sound deadening there's plenty of materials available from audio shops that's cheap and will sufficiently offend the purists. I believe Lotus even offers a Touring pack that reinstalls the carpet and radio, etc.

And hey, there's more to an authentic M635CSi than just the goofy buttons! I can also get an illegible owners manual and paperwork that I can't read! :x

I'm aware, and to strip the original insulation off of the Europa and add it to the Exige would be stupid and a lot of work. As I thought I had said, I thought there was more of a difference between the 2 interiors. I still want the seats damn it![/quote]

To be absolutely honest, that car drives me completely mad. It's hard to find a good set-up, and with my inexperience, I've been over-driving on the RACE@RFC server with no use; I'm 10 seconds slower/lap than the fast guys.

(What's your ranking in the latest Track Day with the 320? If you've attended it...)

It's hard and I will say I'm no expert with the e30 on rFactor..I will say though they are a blast to drift if you can keep em pointed the right way.

Hartham are putting RST-V8s (similar to the Hartley H1-V8, but with more development from what I can tell - Roush are involved in manufacture and a supercharged version was the original choice for the Caparo T1) in Elises for customers http://www.hartham.com/elise.htm so if you could pinch their ideas, you'd be part of the way there.

Radical's Powertec division have been installing 'busa derived V8s in their cars for a while now http://www.powertecracing.com/

I heard about those other ones, I kind of just posted the first one that came to memory. Though in unsupercharged form the Hartley v8 seems to be the most powerful.
