So basically Toyota's releasing a bunch of gutless microengines for their soul-less appliance cars. Even if I could afford a car, I'd rather keep taking the subway than drive something powered by a three-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine.
 
Nothing wrong with a three cylinder or even a two cylinder like the Fiat group has (the noise is excellent!). Toyota of course aren't exactly renowned for making fun engines but I'm sure it'll be perfectly Toyotish.
 
I'm curious to see what the horsepower figures are for these engines. Increased power along with the improved fuel economy would be great (especially as these changes are supposed to gradually fold into the rest of their range), but even improved economy at the same power would be useful (if boring). And at the very least, they could add the power-boosting technology to stuff like the GT-86/FR-S's and Lexus F engines without the power-robbing Atkinson cycle.
