Okay, I hate my PC -- time for a new one

Well, if I OC the card, won't I want to replace the HSF? I've done that on my current card.

Or is the "stock" HSF enough?

The beauty of the 8800 cards is that they overclock very well on the stock HSF.

I overclocked my 8800 GTS from 513/1600 to 625/1900 and the temp really didn't go up that much. The stock HSF rocks :D

What happened to the ATi fan inside viper? I remember when I first came here we were one of the only 2 who actually liked our Radeon 9800 :p, until you bailed and went with the 6600 :p

6800 and yeah, I'll never go back. Ugh.

Funny, through the whole time of the 6800 from nVidia, the x800 was always a superior card in my book.

The card may have been better, but I just can't stand their video drivers. My sister is still running a 9800 Pro and to this day, she still gets crazy artifacts and stuff from time to time. She has to alt+tab out and alt+tab back for them to go away.

(No, it's not OC'ed or overheating.)

Speaking of selling, is it worth trying to sell my existing PC parts? My video card is being handed down to my sister, but what about the rest of it?

Or is it not worth the effort and I should just use it as like a storage box?

I had a similar rig to yours about two years ago, and was never able to sell anything out of it. That was over a year ago and I had a few "better" components.

You might sell the RAM and possibly videocard, but it's probably better to reuse the system for something else.

That's what I figured. Thanks.

Ever thought about a Shuttle? Their capable of SLI and all that jazz now. My old system is a Shuttle build and it's still going strong on it's original fans ect.

Artifacts usually aren't driver related. It's a sign of hardware failure. My brother had the same problem with his 9800 PRO, until it finally died.

I'm not much of an ATI fan these days (mainly because I love the current gen Nvidia series), but to be fair, ATI drivers are pretty good actually.

Well, I used both a 9800 Pro and x800xt for over a year, neither of which ever gave me a single problem. I can really only speak praise of them. Actually sold my 9800 Pro to someone else, he was sick of his FX5800. :p

My X800 died on me within a year, but the 9800Pro did last me a long time, wasn't broken when I upgraded to the x800, then I never went back to ATi, if they come up with something good, my next rig might be back to ATi

I currently have a Radeon 9200SE 128MB and I'm replacing it (with HD2600 Pro 512MB), not because it died, but because (as some of you may know already) It just won't keep up with the latest games. And it's not like I went out and bought the 9200 (it came with my current rig). ATI didn't really give me any problems, I just hate the fact that they're owned by AMD (I much prefer Intel.)

I agree the new 8800 GTS is the best bang for the buck (but, the HD2900XT is better and more expensive) if you're a hardcore gamer and want to invest such a thing.

gt not gts.

The HD2900XT and the 8800GTS (96 shaders version) is about the same in games, but the 8800GT (112 shaders) beats out HD2900XT in almost all tests.

Don't forget price!

If you're such a hardcore gamer get a GTX, there is really no reason to get a ATI in any price range a GeForce will be better.

nobody has really mentioned Mobo yet. i'd get something with SLi so you can bung another card in further down the line. i really like ASUS boards (have one now) and this one looks quite good from the stockist i use:

LINK!

does have on board audio, but apart from that it looks quite good :)

feel free to piss on it if i'm just talking rubbish

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
only dual-core, but it's really fast and cheaper too 195$

I don't have another choice here, but I know Gigabyte makes good motherboards too

Video Card
XFX GeForce 8800GT
THE hottest card around, really good performance for the price. 280$

RAM
Those are all good ram. They all are DDR2-800, have 4-4-4-12(15 for the OCZ) timings and are 2x1GB kits. Pick your brand!

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 98$

SLi kinda sucks. Case in point: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3140&p=12

I think my money would be better spent on just a new single video card to replace the 8800 GT.
That shows that SLI is good though? Unless I am reading something wrong.
With the elimination of the 8800 GTS lineup, and the fact that performance of the 8800 GT is much faster than half the speed of the 8800 GTX, 8800 GT SLI looks pretty good under games that scale with SLI. Not only that, but 2x 8800 GT cards will cost, at most, as much as an 8800 GTX. Once the price of the 8800 GT approaches $200, as we expect it to, the price of a solution faster than the 8800 GTX will be available for much less money.

We do have to keep in mind that not everything scales with SLI, and we still have the occasional minor problem with stability or consistency. The scaling issue can be eased through the use of SLIAA in games that are able to benefit.

Its occasional minor problems and it seems (to me) that more developers are getting rid of these problems.
