NFS: Shift 2 Unleashed

Oh well that just sucked big time. My head still hurts from the frustration of trying to get it to work...

I did a full review (sort of) in my blog if anyone cares to read more rambling about how shitty this game was.

Can't say it was unexpected though.
I wanted to make a video about how different a simulation is compared to this, and for that I was gonna do a lap of Laguna Seca on the MX5 on both this game and iRacing, but I couldn't do any lap in Shift 2 without going all over the place, it's impossible to drive with my wheel.

You can always adjust the lock outside the game. I had the logitech wheel thingy have several profiles set, each for a different type of car. Stage 2, 3 and works cars had 180 lock to lock, normal sports and supercars around 360, standard cars 600.

Glad I didn't buy this piece of shit.

Edit: Maybe FM4 will be good?

To be fair, you can pull similar stunts in GT5, it's just a bit harder :p

It's more of a problem with lack of penalties/proper damage than physics.

^ Got lost to the helmet cam...
But still, best interiors so far. at least the GTI...

So far I only thought the problem was the input lag (playing with a 360 controller on PC, I doubt its worth pulling my Turbo S Clubsport rig the couple of meters over to the PC?), but then I accidentally switched to the outside mode while driving the GTI. It looks funny... You steer and the rear is kinda sliding into place...

Got it on PC. So far ok, I had problems with what I thought was steering lag where i would turn left and half a second later it would start to move. All I did was turn steering sensitivity down to 15% (Maybe could lower it more) and it seems to steer fine now. I have no problems keeping it in a straight line either. (All settings to elite and no aids). Handling is definitely better than Shift one so far I have no wobbling or strange sliding, but I have only used the skyline and Ford Focus which sounds awesome.
Graphics are definitely a step down from Shift. Everything from trackside detail, cars, interior, reflections. Also performance and frame rate aren't as good as shift one.

Here is a very minimal mod which makes tyres less floaty, without being intrusive. AI seems to cope very well with it, and I have good driving sensations with it. It does not change grip levels or anything important, just make the tyres react quicker to steering movements.

Extract the two .bff files from this archive, and place them in Pakfiles folder in your shift install. Backup your two original files before.

2. In logitech profiler, use default wheel settings, uncheck "allow game to change settings".
Shift 2 uses friction and damper it is intended by the devs, it has to be enabled in the profiler if you want at least to feel what FFB is supposed to be. (see pic in original thread)

It seems some fanatec users can't disable separetely friction/damper and therefore they have the full FFB as it was meant to be, while most logitech users miss some effects as they have disabled friction/damper in profiler.

haven't tried it myself

Great find smurfen! One green blob to you!
It doesnt make it perfect but it at least makes Shit Unleashed somewhat enjoyable rather than just plain infuriating. Still weird isnt it how Random Bob from the internet is much better at setting up physics than actual software developers...?

From what I've read, and watched from reviews, the PC version is better than PS3.

If the PS3 version is worse I can't imagine how bad that is.

This is not my test, but it clearly shows the steering lag problem.

Then they need to think faster. :p I do think that the lag is due to poor coding or too much stuff for the game engine to calculate. This is basically just a slightly tweaked Shift 1 engine, but they had to add the head seizurehelmet cam, and look to apex. Basically all these calculations can't keep up with the player input.

So how come the now ancient Race series can do it?

The race series has a lot less going on tho. It has a stationary in car camera, the in car gauges doesn't work (iirc), no speed based motion blur, no look to apex. I'm not saying these are excuses for making a laggy game, especially a racing game. But poor coding with more feature piling on top of that definitely doesn't help.
