Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

So, I'm thinking of selling my motorcycle and buying an old sports car. Trying to work out a deal with my parents where they lend me about 6 grand (that I would pay off after grad school, presumably) plus about $1k I could get from selling the bike, and I could get something cool...yeah, it's another one of BlaRo's Patented Harebrained Schemes?, but I might actually make it work this time.

Looking on eBay Motors because I'm bored as hell - mostly interested in E30 3-Series, but really interested in Triumph TR6s, and there's a couple of old MGBs that pop up. Even though my friend tells me horror stories about the one he used to own and sunk 5 grand into, and even though I hate the ugly-assed things. What I really want is this 2002, I think. Or, how great would it be to annoy my parents with this '66 Mustang?

And for those of us just tuning in, here's the Yammy Seca in question:

Before you take on another project, like an old sports car... why not finish the project you already have? :D

I have deep, deep love for E30:s. I ogled at a perfect one on the web some time ago: white 1983 323i, black leather, gold BBS:s, 90k kms. They wanted 7ke for it, later 5,5ke without the wheels.

Ever thought of buying a bike that's actually good fun? ;)

^Thanks for the help!!

question : is a bendy bus technically MWD (mid wheel drive)

Accordion_bus_small.JPG

since it's basically a regular bus with RWD, with just the ass end of another bus added on, the wheels in the middle do the accelerating, the wheels at the front do the steering, and the rear wheels don't do anything at all.

first MWD vehicle? I imagine how this concept would work in a regular 6 wheeled car...

Well, I rode a bendy bus today, and I sat all the way in the back, on top of the engine. Which means it's RWD, which is quite interesting, because the driving part is in the back end of the bend... so it's kind of like reversing with a trailer, only that the mid wheels are on the passive end, not the driving end.

Must be quite hard to drive.

^that seems quite a weird setup...does it ever go straight with RWD and a bendy bit in the middle?

Or does the driver just sit there in massive 6 wheel drifts opposite locking all the way?
Cause if he is, I wanna take that bus

If either one is going to be your daily driver i'd say no but if its going to be your weekend car i say go for it.
Damn my cousin for putting thoughts into my head. He asked me about the pintara and said are you going to modify it. I said i wasn't sure i might buy a newer car. He then reminded me that a RB26 will fit.:shifty:

If you're going to potentially have 6-7 grand I think you can do a lot better than a 3 speed Mustang with rusty quarters. As far as classics go, personally I'd take a GM A-body or a 240Z. You can get a Buick or Olds A-Body for a lot less than most other mid-size musclecars.

You know you want one. :D

As far as daily driving an old car, it's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. A friend of mine has a '68 Mustang with a 5.0/T5 swap that he drove through college. It looks pretty good and runs great, and I doubt he has more than 5-6 grand in it.

I was going to post how I really want to get an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV at some point in my life. They're just so rare here that good deals are hard to come across. If I found something I liked I don't think any distance would constrain me, I just want one so bad. I like to do random searches on ebaymotors, craigslist, etc. every now and then and see what I can turn up. Well during one of these searches yesterday, I found this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1974...ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

It's a GTV and believe it or not it's in Texas...about 40-50 miles from me, go figure! If there is one thing you cannot find in Texas, it is old European sportscars/cars. Unfortunately it's a 2000 GTV...if I got one I'd have to get what I really want and it's in very poor shape. If I had the facilities and the body work-ing abilities, I think I might possibly be willing to get something in that poor of shape, provided the price is low enough. I see it as rescuing a pretty rare (at least here) car.

Anyway you should consider some Alfas. Although if you got one before me, I would be quite envious! :p

I've got nothing to say about the car itself, but I loled at the crease line going down the side.

Your parents would get the last laugh if you bought that. Says it has new floor and trunk, which means it was rusted to hell. The picture in the trunk shows either no rust proofing or very poor rust proofing, so they're poised to be rusted through again in 5-10 years or sooner if you don't keep the undercarriage clean. The quarters are already rusted through, so the sides of the vehicle are in the process of rusting.

Avoid that one, you can find ones that actually don't have bad rust for a little more than one costs.

Buy the M5 someone posted in "Best of Ebay"

The E34? It's very close to the 535iM in which frankiess is currently tooling around, and while that's definitely a classy car, it's also very large and heavy. I would probably be most at home in an E30 or an E21, if we're talking Beamers. E28's are very nice, too, but around here you usually get a 518(i) which is very underpowered.

also it appears North American Cosworth or whatever they were called has gone out of bussiness which means that my buy an XR4Ti and convert to RS500 spec has become significantly more expensive/annoying... le sigh

Huh? :?

NA Cosworth had little, if anything, to do with the RS500 and I still don't think they'd help you import parts for them as they only concentrate on the new stuff.

Not Cosworth North America they are doing pretty well (everyone i know that has driven one of their new supercharged miatas loves them) I am talking about North American Cosworth Specialties which was a canadian comapany that sold imported Cosworth cars (Sierras RS Cosworths, Sapphire 4x4, Escort RS Cosworths you name it they had em) they also imported YBT motors of all specs including RS500 as well as making an RS500 Widebody kit that would fit our US Spec XR4Ti's. Now that i think about it i should be able to import an actual RS500 in 3 years under the 25 year rule... however the XR4Ti plan has the added bonus of being a bunch of smaller large hits to the wallet instead of one single 20Kish (i am betting) hit

Rain + RWD =

I don't know how to fix a car. If my car breaks down, and the fuel gauge isn't on "E", I'm fucked!

I'd make a horrible mechanic. "My car won't start." "Well, maybe there's a murderer chasing you."

People who want to 4-wheel shouldn't if they don't know how. Yesterday, it was raining here, and I live in tract housing but part of the area isn't developed yet, so there is a 7-10 acre patch of dirt that people like to r/c on or drive on. Well, in between the patch and the road, there is a small ditch that would normally be passable, but further along the road, there is a way to get on the patch without the ditch. Anyways, a guy in an FJ Cruiser thought he would go mudding, but it didn't go that way. There was an FJ stuck to the top of the wheels in mud. I drove by with some of my friends to see it and possibly snap a shot. Turns out it wasn't empty, and the guy inside looked quite agitated when he found that my car was not actually the tow truck.
