Technology of Tomorrow! circa 1950

There are windows in the wings of that plane...

Everything looks like in the Fallout world

Anyone else have an unexplainable urge to buy war bonds after viewing those pictures?

The people at Bethesda Softworks just pissed themselves.
I think the graphics artists already stumbled across this and used is for inspiration and reference, because what they've created in the ruined Fallout-world and this is very very similar. They might also have watched a fair bit of GM's "Futurama" and similar visions endorsed by GM. Interestingly BOHN was also based in Detroit. Seems they were really into "the future" there back then.

It's a shame in a way we don't have the optimism that they had for the future.

Here's GM showing us the kitchen appliances of tomorrow

And here's Disney showing us the roads of tomorrow. Of course in the future women may not drive.

And finally, everyone needs a fallout shelter.

I found this which highlights how real the threat of imminent nuclear war seemed back then, and how it could be exploited for many things. Like encouraging the people to keep their houses painted and clean. Produced by the "National Clean Up-Paint Up-Fix Up Bureau".

Air brushed, art deco pornography is all I see.

Out of all the depictions of the future (from the very grim and depressing digital green text computer screens of the 70s and 80s to the utterly sterile forsights now) I have to say, the future look best from 1950. There is a romance there for sure. It was as if they were excited about the future and wanted it to embody the spirit of their own time.

Yeah, but I think it's more the state of modern science and technology. Just think of how far we've come since then, then think of how far we've come since ten years ago. Everything's just moving so fast now that it's like we're already living in the future, you know?

Those dumb bastards have yet to get a single thing right.

We have some multi layer freeways in Seattle...

Last I checked none of them were going through the Columbia Center.

Yeah but back then the future would be bright and happy. Today we're living well above the standard of living they had back then but yet our visions of the future are seldom of a bright and happy nature, instead we worry that the future will be dark, dirty and we'll run out of food or energy. The people from the 50's imagined flying cars and vacations on the moon and today we have USB-powered mittens and online porn.

I dunno I think the future from the 1980s looked awesome, if a bit too Japanese

Idk what is this concern of Tomorrow, when you can have your imagination run wild about the past...

Steampunk ftmfw.

What happens if the dark ages never happened and the Roman Catholic Church never existed...?

Hovercars to the moon by 1980!

Yes because the Romans where on the cusp of developing algebra and airplanes before the barbarians took out half their empire.

Simple, install these thingamabobs behind the air vent grates around the house. Hook it up to the wifi and your central heating will become one large speaker system.

I thought there was about to be steam engines in Rome before the church took them out back and killed them?

In general, the Church made it really hard to develop technology and make discoveries because advancement was "blasphemy" and "witchcraft".

A guy in Alexandria developed a steam engine. It was seen as a curiosity and never used beyond party tricks (this was well before the fall of the Western Empire). Classical peoples in general didn't think of technology as we do today. They pretty much assumed the same level of technology existed before and would continue to exist until the end of time.

The Church only had as much power as the governments allowed them to have. Their failure to ban crossbows is a good example of this. Also the Catholic Church did not really start to split off from the Imperial Church until around 8-900 AD.
