^ Some excellent discussion above here, I especially appreciate MrChips insights. However, speaking of cockpits, here's some cockpit wallpapers:https://pic.armedcats.net/l/li/lieutenant47/2010/11/10/Aviation-Shuttle_Cockpit.jpg[/url]
This was honestly one of the most dissapointing places I've ever been. You see all that stuff out the left two windows? Yeah, that's the play pen. Like...McDonalds play pen. It has a ball pit. Albeit a ball pit with ball guns that allow you to shoot balls to the ball pit two stories above, but a ball pit none the less. The tour is great though! Hope you enjoy having your photo taken ;)

BBC News ? Boeing halts 787 Dreamliner test flights

Hope they sort it out quickly, the 787 is a cool looking plane.

Ugh. I know this is unrelated (probably) to the recent failure, but had a chance to sit down with a senior supply chain manager for Boeing. He's from the defense side but was assigned for a while to help out with the 787. Said it's a joke over there right now and the local press supports that. Still wish I was in my schools supply chain program as we do a lot of work for Boeing through the program and thus get a lot of insights from students and teachers.

Love that place! AF1 was a joy to tour, haven't made it down for Concord though :( I feel remiss in my duties! I'll take my camera the next time I go!

How awesome would it be if that stair case was just a slide from the rear emergency door? Super awesome.

(Sorry for including photos but some were a bunch of pages back)

A couple of obscure pre-war 1930?s flying boats, whose designs were originally commissioned by Pan-Am

Fairchild 91
That is one big, bad prop to get you around. Not very handsome, but hey whatever floats or flies your boat.

Consolidated Commodore 16
Progenitor to the very beautiful and successful PBY Catalina as used by the USN in WWII.

And talking of beautiful aircraft, in the 1950?s she was the Queen of the skies:

I love flying boats and amphibians. I don't know why, but I do.

I believe this was just a shell of an aircraft when it was found, little more than a rotting mass of cables and the wing spar. It was restored and flown down the length of Africa, replicating a flight done by the same type of aircraft back in the 19-somethings.

Oh, and it's a Sikorsky, so that makes it awesome.

Here's another one with twin engines:

Ahh, a tugboat with wings.

What's the domes for at the back of the plane?

Well if CoD:WaW is in any way accurate, the domes are either for a) shooting guns out of to blow shit up, or b) rescuing people whose shit got blown up.

The PBY was an observation, scout, and Search & Rescue aircraft. The blisters on the rear, along with the nose "turret" were used by observers to search for enemy ships, downed pilots, etc.

The PBY also delivered vital cargo to remote outposts in the South Pacific in WWII and went on to perform maritime patrol and rescue functions off the US coasts after the war. It was a bitch to fly, being a heavy and somewhat underpowered aircraft with no hydraulic control surfaces. The pilots who flew the PBY had to wrestle the aircraft around using their own strength.

Since we're mentioning epic flying boats...

The Saunders-Roe Princess, only 3 made, all decommisioned afaik because the market changed

That's simultaneously one of the prettiest and ugliest planes I've ever seen.
