Ownership Verified: My first car is a Benz

This weekend i tried to fit my alloys, with mixed results...

I knew that the wieghts used to balence the front wheels out would hit the brake calipers and make an ugly sound and possibly damaging something, so i had them balanced out with flatter weights at the local mercedes dealer (who didnt refuse to listen to my problem and just tell me tey're overbooked, like atu:shakefist:) for only 15?. however, when i first drove with the alloys mounted i noticed a serious shaking in the steering wheel going on above 40 km/h. Now there might be several reasons to this:

- The brakes. The discs are warped, despite being only 8000 kms old. You get what you pay for, these were cheap discs.<_<
This may be the cause of my problem, however not a likely one, because with the steelies the only thing that made you notice the warped discs was a vibrating when braking, not generally when driving

- Some kind of worn steering link. This is very unlikely, since i checked them all and none of them was loose or greasy.

- Finally the tires themselves, maybe the profile is somewhat uneven, and makes the steering wobble. This is the most likely cause, because a)when i fitted the newly balanced wheels on the rear Axle, the wobble was gone, only the shaking when braking remained.
and b) unlike the winter tires, all of which are Michelin tires, the summer tires are mixed: one fulda tire, one made in poland, and two i cant recall off the top of my head.

Sorry for the unnecessary post, but I just had to write this down before i overthink it, and tomorrow i will fit the other alloys with the thick weights in the front and see if the wobble is gone. if yes, they too will get flat weights.

^W124 4 life!! :D Altough your collection is much nicer than mine.

So the wobbly wheel problem has solved itself, I just switched the front and back alloys, and since the front ones are now a Goodyear and a Continetal, all is good.
However the next problem awaits, since its eastern i have to drive to my relatives on summer tires... and it snowed today <_<

Wait, what? You have 2 different tire brands on your front wheels? That's not only wrong but illegal...

Well the previous owner had them put on... And since I'm a cheap/poor bastard, I'm going to wear them down this summer and put new ones on next winter. (because they are easier to come by in the winter, not to drive on them :p)
I am well aware about the stupid factor of doing so, but i didn't know that this was illegal:|
Also they're not different sizes or anything.

Edit: I just checked, and on each axle both tires have the same type of tire (radial) which makes it "legal" and the profile looks identical, despite them being from different manufacturers. It is still not the safest option, but in my mind they have enough profile to justify using them until they are worn down.

Wrong? Probably. Illegal? No. You need to have tyre dimensions that are within your car's specification, but there is no legal requirement for identical tyre brands or models.

looking sharp for the summer:

Well turns out, I wasn't aware enough of having shit tires.

Today i drove to austria to fill up, wich normally is a 40 min. drive, but they renewed the road, so i had to stand in line for an HOUR  (keep in mind nearly empty tank + traffic = bad)

So on my way back home I opened it up a bit on the Autobahn, until i reached top speed of this car:

niiiceee :)
Well, turns out you shouldnt do such things when your tires arent tip-top.
Next thing i hear/feel: heavy wobble in the back, even heavier wobble, BANG. :-o all within 5 sec.

Luckily the tire only lost its contact surface, but still:

 Tire has a LOT of force.

Edit: I do not expect nice comments about this, but please don't tell me I'm stupid for doing this, I already now that.

Also:  to the god of tires for not making this a blow out.

Lucky you its only the tire and the bumper. Could have ended way worse. F.e. with someone else posting this for you, because you are not longer able to.

Yep, that's why I won't go above 120 km/h for now /maybe never again. I don't want to die a fiery death. Also it saves on fuel.

And tomorrow new / good used tires will be fitted.

Get proper tyres on your car that have the proper speed rating, and you shouldn't have any problems hitting and keeping it at that speed. Also, are you shure that was the top speed? I got my 2.0l 190E up to 207 on the A4 between Aachen and K?ln, and I could've gone even faster (rated top speed, 190).

It speaks volumes for your luck and also for your skills that you didn't spin out, crash and die on that one.

Don't worry, that'll pass. I had such a phase myself for a few months after I encountered (didn't hit, though) a pedestrian on the Autobahn... at 180+.

Wow, that's bad, you're lucky you and the car are still in one piece...

How old were the tires and which speed rating did they have? I don't trust any tires older than 5 years, let alone refurbished ones where only the contact surface has been renewed.

The picture isn't accurate, i reached the true top speed 1 1/2 years ago, that was something around 210 kmh, with three people and tools in the trunk.
And: proper tires -> $$$ for now i will get good used tires for the rear, and the front also, as soon as possible and will buy new goodyears or contis in the fall, when i earn real money, not the joke of a wage i get now

Thanks :) Also speaks for my phenomenal calmness, i have very low blood pressure ;). Gotta stay cool in that situation.

And :confused::shock:
Why do people do such things:no:

Edit: Ok i collected the remainder of my tire from the autobahn too, but i waved my hazard triangle and made sure the next truck coming was atleast 1 km away.
(waving the Triangle didn't stop one idiot with loads of space in the neighbour lane from driving over the tire strip when i was 5 m away)

I'm scared of posting the age of this specific tire. I was a little shocked too when i checked afterwards.
10 years, but not a single crack or dry-rotting, that would've raised my attention.

A little Update:
My fear of high speeds didnt last long, yesterday i took it up to 170 kmh on the autobahn :D
That is mostly thanks to my new Michelins, wich are excellent, even at high speeds, there is a lot less wandering etc.

I filled my oil up to max again today, for the first time 5600km's after changing it. oil consumption: >0,1L /5600km :)
And i know where the leaks are: the oil cap and where the enginge ventilation meets the air box. I have 2 used airboxes lying in my garage, i just need to swap out the parts, so 3 bad ones make 1 that is good. The oil cap problem is a bit more work, it is likely that the failing paint on the valve cover lets oil through, because i changed the oil cap seal 2 months ago and it still leaks oil :(

And i changed the flexible front brake lines, because they started to throw bubbles:
http://img820.imageshack.**/img820/8700/p4257567.jpg
I made a handy tool for bleeding the brake lines with an air compressor, an old brake fluid reservoir cap and a tire valve:

Aaaand new ones in:

Original mercedes-benz, wich i got for a good price after i mentioned maybe going to an aftermarket supplier, because they charged too much

As it is now, i'm looking forward to reaching the 200000 km-mark. only 4500km left to go

Since I'm now driving a lot more than i used to (I average over 130 km per day) I now only have 500km to go :)

But on tuesday THE FUCKING ODO quit on me

However, the speedo was still working, so i knew it could only be that the gear which drives the Odometer-shaft had seperated from that shaft and was no longer driven by the worm wheel. Appearently this happens quite often with the Mechanical odometers in older Benzes.

Today i found the time to take the instrument cluster out of the car, and then apart on the kitchen table.

http://img24.imageshack.**/img24/8869/img1717eb.jpg
Disassembly only took about 20 min btw, these cars really are built to be worked on :)
But to my surprise, not the gear had seperated from the shaft, but the shaft had seperated from it's foundation o_O
http://img17.imageshack.**/img17/9405/img1718i.jpg
No problem, pushed the shaft back in and then rolled the odometer 382km's forward, instead of backwards like many others would have done

And since I already had it out, I might aswell polish the plastic screen, which looked like this:
http://img16.imageshack.**/img16/7697/img1721cg.jpg
Those aren't sprinkles from a drink, they are permanent foggy round circles, wich can't be removed by just cleaning. You can't even see them all the time, only when the light is right, but then its very annoying.
So after about an hour of polishing, the screen went from looking like above to looking like this:
http://img109.imageshack.**/img109/9496/p7277799.jpg
I'm very happy with how this turned out :)

Thats enough for today, tomorrow I might pick up a rear bumper that isn't on its last leg.

Edit: After a Test drive I can confidently say that everything is better that before it broke, even the Speedometer-needle's parkinson fixed itself, because the core of the speedo kable got relaxed during reassembly :)
