The awesome boats thread

educate the ignorant europeans, what's the difference?

they both explode, don't they?

Ballistic missile makes a nice ballistic arc. Cruise missile flys like an aeroplane, more or less.

A ballistic missile has a boost phase where it is under power, then it coasts on that momentum on a ballistic trajectory before hitting it's target by falling almost straight down. A ballistic projectile is more like an artillery shell with a boost of power at the start of the trip that provides the momentum to get all the way to the target. It is very hard to defend against ballistic missiles because they come down from above at supersonic speeds. ICBMs, or Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, achieve sub-orbital space flight to reach their targets. Shorter range ballistic missiles might not leave the atmosphere, or may only reach the upper levels of the stratosphere at the peak of their flight.

A cruise missile is a winged missile that flies close to the ground and uses an air-breathing jet engine for the entire trip. Often a short boost phase is used to get the missile out of the launch tube but this lasts no more than a couple seconds. The missile then deploys wings and starts it's jet engine. Such a missile is capable of flying complex pre-programmed routes to the target, is often equipped with sophisticated sensors and software to fly very close to the ground, and often can visually identify the target for the final attack (combined with the mission profile and GPS). I believe some naval anti-ship cruise missile are able to identify specific ship types by the silhouette and can be programmed, for example, to ignore the escort ships of a fleet an only attack the carrier.

Cruise missiles can be launched from ground launching stations, mobile launch vehicles, submarines, surface ships and even aircraft that are in flight.

Aww... you changed the picture before I could make a bad joke about phaballistic arc. :(

Short answer: the ballistic missile flies like an artillery shell (ie not really flying, but at the mercy of gravity), while the cruise missile is basically an unmanned airplane.

Back in the day these were real performance boats so they were equipped with big V8's instead of the diesels they use on new Rivas.

Diesels are usually considered as more desireable but also more expensive option on new boats.
So the new boats with petrol engines are usually either cheap (or small) or seriously high performance (like Hydrolift r-series or American cigarette boats).
New Rivas are more like very expensive luxury cruisers so obviously they come with diesels.

If anything, this makes them more beautiful.

Great news on the SS United States... :D Another milestone in avoiding the scrappers was reached earlier this month, as the SS Unites States Conservancy officially took over the title for the ship, and they now, formally, own it. (New York Times) (Wall Street Journal)

I really hope they get it nice and shiny again, just like when she were in service:

She will obviously never enter service again, but it would be great to see her, one of only a very few surviving ocean liners...
