Good old University filtering. Mine blocks IRC so I can't even chat with people on another forum (they put one of those embeddable chat box thingers in a post...) because somehow I could "Gasp" send files/receive files!

Retail clerks who will NOT leave you alone. I walked straight out of a store today where I had intended not only to buy something but also to come back and buy even more if it worked out when 2 clerks hovered over me in less than a minute. If I smile and say "no thank you I'm just browsing" please make yourself busy elsewhere for at least a couple of minutes.

Penn State is very, very cool about their official campus internet. The official policy is "No censorship WHATSOEVER." - you can literally look at porn in the labs and the worst the staff can do is ask you to move to a less busy spot.

I don't know if the same policies get applied to residence halls, though, because I've never known anyone who was stupid enough to actually live on campus

Well, then...note to self: if Baylor really DOES expel me for no reason, Penn State sounds like the place to go...

Fun Penn State fact: Penn State has issued more degrees than every other university still in operation in the United States COMBINED. Partially due to it being so stupidly old, partially due to it being so stupidly huge (on top of the primary campus, there are literally dozens of others).

It also holds the distinguished position of being the most expensive state school in the nation AND the least expensive private full-line university in the nation (Due to the stupid schitzophrenic relationship the state and university have - it's the official state University, but it's privately held and the state periodically decides to prove they don't have any obligation by removing any and all funding from revision 1 of the budget, causing a massive shitstorm)

Also, it takes an act of biblical stupidity to get kicked out. If you can prevent your GPA from dipping below 2.0 for more than 3 straight semesters and avoid murdering anybody, you're set.

 Yeah, in terms of content, the network is wide open except for programs/protocols that people can use to pirate. Kids still use limewire (what a vector for viruses......:rolleyes:) but just set it to not transmit. Torrenting's a no go though, I've tried and it can't find a connection.

The network overall is ok, it can get a bit slow at times though.

The in residence hall internet restrictions at PSU are pretty tight- strict bandwidth caps and such. :S That was one turn off, among many (big school, higher price) for me. :p

I could never quite wrap my head around the odd one out status of PSU, whether it was really a state school or not. In Ship's Student Union, you won't find a PSU school banner hanging down with the other state schools.:rolleyes:

It's actually rather bizarre. Pennsylvania has two systems of "State Schools" - the ones it has oversight of and the ones it just pays (if it feels like paying)

Primarily, they have the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, which consists of the likes of Shippensburg, Millersville, Kutztown , Cal U, Lock Haven, essentially anything ending in "of Pennsylvania". In political bullshiteese, these together constitute Pennsylvania's single "State University" - essentially a takeoff of the "University System" arrangements of the larger, more western states (ex. UC, UT, etc.)

However, for equally annoying political reasons, they also have the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, which is a uniquely Pennsylvanian invention in that it makes no fucking sense whatsoever - encompassing PSU, Temple, Lincoln University and U Pitt. These are all privately held and the government has no actual responsibility to them.

The bizarre duality of Penn State comes because the school's omnipresence and high profile makes it look an awful lot like a State University System, to the point that almost every student, many of the faculty and staff, almost all of the general public, and indeed some of the politicians themselves have been fooled into thinking it is. After all, it has "State" in the name.

Petrol stations that ave been turned into cafes/convenience stores.

I go to the petrol station to, you know, put petrol in my car. Today i had to wait in line while some douchebag ordered a latte, inquired about what 2-for-1 specials they had and then spent 5 minutes trying to pay with a bank card that didn't work.

Thats the other thing i hate, unless it's something hugely expensive i pay in cash. Give money, get change, go. If you have to wait while someone repeatedly swipes their worn out card, then blames the machine for not reading it, then takes ages to punch in their pin code, then wait while it gets approved. I dunno it just shits me.

I quite like mine. Food's good, coffee is good, and you can get caffeine (person fuel) at the same place you get car fuel. However, I am not one of those douchebags who parks at the pump, and I understand how to use the fucking automated ordering kiosks thereby not tying up the line.

The one I mostly go to has a Dunkin Donuts (coffee shop chain), but they have their own counter. I pay with a card now for convenience though. I can pump gas, go inside, get change, go back out to car.... or..... swipe a card, pump gas, and leave.

people who insist on slamming on the brakes when there's ice. Stopping and starting 30 times over isn't fun when you're sliding around

I can't remember the last time I used cash, let alone a check.
I use a credit card, which earns me points that I use to get Best Buy gift cards. It's probably about $150 a year or so.
It goes wrong maybe once in two years or so, and it's generally about as fast as using non exact cash, and a lot faster than using a check.

Pepsi, if dropped in the right spot, fucking hurts.

We don't have those automated thingos. They have the same person who is the cashier also serving food and drinks at my local. Usually if i am getting petrol it is because i am on my way to somewhere and i hate waiting. I can see the convenience if it's late and no other shops are open.

I don't know anyone who uses cheques any more. Most cards are fine but i always seem to get stuck behind someone using a card that needs to be swiped 10 times in a very precise way before it works. I hardly ever use a card, the points aren't worth it for me, $150 is like less than half a days work. I have learned to be careful with credit, it's too tempting to spend money i don't have.

Direct deposit + debit card

amount has nothing to do with it since it comes straight out of my bank anyway. I just use it when it's easier

I get paid cash a lot at work so i have to deposit the money in the bank before i can access it with a card. It's just easier for me to use the cash. The money that get's paid direct deposit i use to pay off accounts.
